We rescued Marigold from Hamilton Animal Control!
Poor Marigold was found with a large, open wound on her back leg. The wound had obviously been open for some time because it was full of maggots (eww!) HAC officers took Marigold straight from where she was found to the vet. The wound was flushed out, she was prescribed medication, and Marigold was sent back to HAC to wait out her stray time. The next day, it became obvious that the wound was infected, and Marigold was not feeling well. HAC staff were hoping to send her back to the vet for treatment. Unfortunately, the rules at HAC for stray animals state that only a certain amount of money can be spent on vet care per animal, and Marigold had already maxed out her budget. HAC supervisors told the staff that if they sent Marigold back to the vet, it would only be for her to be euthanized. This situation was all unfolding just before we got to HAC to rescue Frankie. It was the end of the day, the shelter was closing in a few moments, and HAC staff were desperate to find somewhere for Marigold to go before they had no choice but to send her to her death. As we were about to leave the shelter with Frankie, they asked us if we would be willing to rescue a cat with a “hole in its leg”. We took one look at Marigold and knew we couldn’t leave without her…knowing she would be dead if we left her behind.
Thankfully, our vets are amazingly accommodating and they saw Marigold right away. There is a lot of damage to the skin and muscle in the area of the wound, and during the examination, another wound was discovered on Marigold’s belly. On top of that, she was running a high fever. She’s scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning. We’re hoping everything will be okay and that our vets don’t find any further injury or issues during her surgery.
Please send Marigold your well wishes for a safe surgery and quick recovery.
Please donate here to help with Marigold’s medical care.
November 11/14 UPDATE
Marigold update!
This is Marigold at the vet today. Her wounds are healing nicely, the I.V. has been removed and she is receiving pain management medication orally now. Tomorrow she’ll have a second set of x-rays to determine if the hip fracture is healing on its own, or if she’ll need surgery to repair it. Sometimes this type of fracture can heal itself with cage rest. Either way, she will likely have a limp when all is said and done.
Marigold is using the litter box and she has a very healthy appetite. Very good signs indeed!
We’ll post updates as we get them from the vet, but things are looking really good for her!
November 16th/14 UPDATE
Marigold at the vet today. Turns out Marigold’s hip may not be as bad as once thought! Secondary x-rays showed that the line on her hip that was originally thought to be a fracture, is likely a ‘growth plate’ line. Our vets tell us that the extent of her flesh injury is probably what was causing her not to put weight on that leg. Her wound has been sewn up and it’s healing wonderfully.
Marigold is still being kept under cage rest observation, but as you can see, she’s up and mobile and happy! A few more days at the vet and she should be able to go to her foster home.
Thank you so much for all your well wishes and donations. They have certainly done wonders for sweet Marigold!
November 25th/14 UPDATE
Marigold’s wounds have healed wonderfully, and she doesn’t need any surgery on her hips! She was well enough to leave the vet a few days ago, and she’s now settling in at her foster home. She’ll need a week or so in her foster home to be sure she’s healthy enough to be spayed, and once she’s healed from that surgery, she’ll be available for adoption.
Through all of her ordeal, Marigold has done nothing but purr, give head bonks and flop for belly rubs. She is the most sweet and gentle cat, and we know she’ll be a lovely forever friend for someone when she’s ready.
Thanks for all your support and kind words for Marigold. They certainly worked!
