Marilyn Bunroe
* Marilyn Bunroe found her forever home with lovely people and another bunny to be friends with! *
Marilyn Bunroe was brought into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. Staff at the shelter were unaware Marilyn was pregnant, and she gave birth to three babies a few days after her arrival. Staff did their best to make Marilyn comfortable and not disturb her and the newborns too much, as bunnies can be very sensitive to stress.
Unfortunately, Marilyn’s babies passed away one by one over the next few days. It may have been any number of reasons Marilyn’s babies didn’t survive. We’ll never know for sure what happened, but aside from making a nest for them, it seems Marilyn didn’t feed or look after her kits at all after they were born.
We rescued Marilyn from HAS and after a couple of weeks in her foster home, she headed over to the Lincoln County Humane Society vet clinic to be spayed. Shortly after the surgery was complete, we got a call from Dr. Davis at the clinic. Marilyn had done well during the surgery, but Dr. Davis told us that Marilyn’s uterus had a large hole in it. And shockingly, a baby (deceased) from her last litter had made its way through the hole and was found floating around the space in Marilyn’s abdomen. Marilyn is lucky to have survived giving birth, and lucky to have not developed any complications from to the hole and the wayward baby. Had Marilyn ever bred again, she likely would have died. Thank goodness we were able to get her out of the shelter and fixed before things turned bad.
Marilyn healed from her surgery like a champ, and she is now ready to find her forever home!
Here’s a report from Marilyn’s foster home:
“Marilyn Bunroe is a lovely, affectionate rabbit who is used to being mostly free-range in the house. All of the necessary rabbit proofing is required, but she is generally non-destructive and pretty easy company. Marilyn is perfectly litter box trained and will make the trip to her bedroom to use her box when she needs to go. When unsupervised, Marilyn spends alone time in her bunny-proofed bedroom where she enjoys digging in a box full of hay and organizing her toys. She loves her foster dog sister and she would make an excellent companion for another bunny. Marilyn does not like to be picked up at all but she does like to give and receive lots of kisses from the comfort of the floor (or the couch). Marilyn is very social and likes to be part of the household, hopping around and checking to see what everyone is up to and then taking a long nap in her favourite spot in the corner (or wherever is as physically close to the dog as possible). Marilyn doesn’t necessarily know her name, but she definitely comes running when the fridge door opens and she knows that the magic words “bunny-bunny-bunny” mean that it’s time for a snack in her bedroom! She is the binky queen and provides endless entertainment as she runs laps doing the ‘Bunny 500.’ All around, Marilyn Bunroe is an excellent bun and will make a lucky family very happy for years to come!”
