Cora
* Cora found her forever home with an amazing family! *
Cora came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray and was never claimed by her owner. When she arrived at HAS, poor Cora was infested with fleas, her nails were severely overgrown, and she was so matted that the mats were literally pulling the fur off of her skin. She desperately needed dental surgery, needed to be spayed, and she had skin issues beyond the terrible matting. Despite all that, Cora was friendly as can be, and still had lots of energy for a girl her age!
On her rescue day, we got Cora into the vet for a check up and blood work. Blood came back perfect, but poor Cora was in heat, so she had to wait a few weeks to have her spay and dental surgery. In the mean time, she did great in her foster home and made friends with all the people and animals she met. Such a sweet girl!
When she was finally ready for surgery, the vets opened her up, only to find there was no uterus or ovaries! Very strange, since she had shown signs of being in heat, and because there was no spay scar present. Staff at the vet clinic were all shocked. Thankfully, they were able to pull out five rotten teeth while she was under, so the surgery was still a success!
Cora healed perfectly in her foster home, and now she’s ready to find her forever home!
Here’s a note from her foster mom:
“Cora is an adorable senior girl and you would never guess that she is the age she is. Cora is very affectionate and gives about a million kisses and cuddles a day. She is great when meeting new people and new dogs and she loves everyone she meets. Cora adapts easily to new situations and it will not take her long at all to settle in with her forever family.
Cora would be happy as the only pet in her family and she would love a human who will share their bed with her and take her for walks. Cora has limited vision so she does not really play fetch. Since having some rotten teeth removed, Cora is more comfortable and she is discovering her toys. Despite having only a few teeth, she loves to chew on bones and loves her daily treats.
Don’t let her small size and age fool you, Cora has a lot of energy for a senior and she loves to go for walks. She is always out front at the end of her leash leading the way. Cora is looking for a family that will take her for a couple of walks a day. When Cora first arrived from the shelter she did have a few accidents. Cora has come such a long way with her potty training and has been accident free for a few weeks now. As long as you treat her more like a puppy and take her outside often and for her walks then she will do great. Once she settles in her foster mom’s bed she is good and sleeps through the night.
Cora is very loyal and she loves her humans a lot. All her love causes Cora to get anxious and bark when her family leaves the house. Cora is hoping for a forever home where there is someone home most of the day with her. Cora would not do well being left alone everyday for long periods of time. Cora is doing really good with her crate training though and actually gets excited to go into her crate because she gets a peanut butter kong . Her excitement is short lived and Cora can be vocal and bark once her treat is done until she settles to sleep. She does eventually settle though and she can be left in her crate for a few hours at a time. Cora would do best in a detached home where she won’t bother the neighbours with all her talking.
Even though Cora is good when meeting new dogs she can still be reactive with other dogs when it comes to food and her human’s attention. With the right non-reactive, patient dog Cora could do well. Cora is much better with the other dog in her foster home than when she first arrived but she is still learning. Cora would do best in a cat free home or a home with a confident cat who will put her in her place. Cora sometimes forgets her manners with cats and can get fixated on them and she also can be reactive if they move too quickly around her or get to close to her people.
Cora does have a couple of teeth that may need to be removed down the road but they are not bothering her at this time. Cora also gets really itchy and dry skin but a diet of no beef and having fish oil twice a day added to her meals has really helped.
Cora is a really special girl and she deserves a wonderful, loving forever family that she can live out her senior years with.”
November 2019 – UPDATE
A note from Cora’s forever home:
“I just wanted to give you a little Cora update… She is the best! 😍
I’ll give you the not-so-good news first which was she broke a tooth in Sept and when she had surgery to remove it/clean, they decided to remove two more teeth… BUT she healed up perfectly and it has not slowed down her love of treats at all! She is still loving her walks and runs and most of all, her belly rubs. She is all love. She now ONLY sleeps in my parents’ bed and she does NOT like visitors 🤣 she is just the sweetest baby ever 💓 These are a couple of pics from the life of Cora and a little run around Niagara on the Lake…!”
June 15th, 2020 – UPDATE
Happy one year adoptaversary Cora!
May 2021 – Cora was our Forever Home Friday feature!
“14 is definitely the new 5 in dog years! This wee gem (as she is known in this house) may have cataracts and hardly any teeth but she does not let that stand in the way of exploring the woods, running across the whole park (stopping periodically to roll in the grass) and relaxing with her favourite treats at Starbucks. Her metabolism isn’t what it used to be but who among us has not gained ¼ of their body weight in these trying times! Really, just more belly to rub…
She may not have mastered snapping her paws but she has her puppy eyes down pat. She knows that a water bowl will be by her side if she rolls over and lifts her head, that if (when) she gets up between 2-5 AM, someone will also get up to re-tuck her in and that rolling over for a belly rub is a much better alternative to getting out of bed.
She has the waggiest tail and wants nothing more than to be with her family. We hope she feels half the love and joy we feel for her… We are so lucky to have her and so thankful to Ladybird for making sure these sweet souls get the love and lives they deserve! Special thanks to Andrea Rees for being Cora’s foster mom and for taking such amazing care of her!”
