Snickers
* Snickers found his forever home with an amazing person! Yippee!!! *
After spending some time with the wonderful people at K9 Balance in Blue Mountain, Snickers is ready to be adopted!
He did really well in the “stay and learn” program there, and though he’ll still need stability and structure in his forever home, he’s made great strides with his training and he’s doing awesome.
Here’s a note from Justine at K9 Balance:
“Snickers is such a fun little guy! High energy and ready to run but also a great snuggler. He has learned to walk very nicely on leash and comes diligently and excitedly when called giving you his full attention. Snickers would prefer and do best in a home where he is your everything! He has learned to accept people being around but he really only wants to be with his person. He also is respectful walking with other dogs but would rather not mingle with them.
If you are looking for a great walk or jogging partner and cuddle buddy to share your life with, Snickers just might be your guy!
He has learned so much, and coaching sessions will be provided to his adopter so they can learn how to maintain his good manners and build the best relationship with him.”
With all Snickers has been through since coming to us, the last thing we want would be for him to regress. Potential adopters must be prepared to continue to put in the time for continued training, and be willing to be patient with Snickers when it comes to new situations and stimuli.
Please adopt Snickers!
July 2019 Update
Snickers’ big adventure!
This little dog has been through so much since his rescue. He ended up at Hamilton Animal Services after being found as a stray along with an elderly and very ill Shih Tzu. Neither were fixed, and Jelly Bean the Shih Tzu was in horrible shape. She was severely matted and suffering from lymphoma.
A short time after we rescued them from the shelter, Jelly Bean passed away from her illness. Snickers was very bonded to Jelly Bean and for a short while he was distraught without her.
We were thrilled when Snickers was adopted a few weeks later. We were hoping the change of scenery and new people to love him would help with his grieving. Unfortunately, he became so attached to his adopter that he would lash out at anyone who came near them. To top it off, his reaction to the cat in the home was so bad that the cat had to be locked away in a separate part of the house so Snickers wouldn’t harm her.
Snickers behaviour was just too much for his adopter and the cat and he had to be returned to us.
Snickers’ original foster home was no longer available, so we placed him into another foster home where there were older children and no other pets. At this foster home, his “guarding” behaviour escalated. He wouldn’t let certain family members near him, but others were his best friends. He would be a wonderful sweet guy at times, and then growl and lash out to bite in certain situations. A dog trainer was called in for help, but we were told Snickers was pretty much “unadoptable.” We didn’t believe that, so we reached out to Justine at K9 Balance.
Justine welcomed Snickers into the K9 Balance “stay and learn” program and we took the drive up to the Blue Mountain area to get Snickers to his new, temporary digs. Snickers has been doing great so far. He definitely has a few things to learn, and we’re confident that Justine can help him. This program is not going to “fix” Snickers, but it will give him (and us!) a better understanding of what triggers his aggression and how to create an environment that will help Snickers thrive when he is again ready to be adopted.
We don’t know how many homes Snickers had before he ended up at HAS. Could have been five different homes for all we know. Then since he has come into our care, he lost his dog friend, he lost his foster mom, he lost his adopter, and then lost his second foster family. We certainly can’t blame Snickers for having some behaviour issues. He’s probably so confused and scared to lose anyone else in his life, he wants to protect them with all his might!
Don’t sorry wee Snickers. We aren’t going to give up on you!

Snickers and Jelly Bean showed up to Hamilton Animal services together as strays and no owner came forward for them.
Sadly, Jelly Bean passed away of lymphoma a week after her arrival. Snickers was certainly missing her, but his foster mom gave him lots of extra attention while he adjusted to not having Jelly Bean at his side.
Snickers did great for his neuter surgery, and now he’s ready to find his forever home!
Snickers needs a forever home with no children, and no cats or other small animals. He is okay with dogs who are larger than he is. He needs a family who has the time and commitment to help with training. Training will be a requirement for his adoption.
