Mama Darcy
* Mama Darcy found her forever home with lovely people! *
Mama Darcy and her kittens Tucker and Peewee (as well as many other animals) were surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services by their owner because they could no longer care for them.
Mama Darcy had a very serious case of stomatitis that was causing her a lot of pain. We had her spayed and got her the dental surgery she so desperately needed. All but four teeth were removed, and she’s feeling so much better. Mama Darcy healed perfectly in her foster home, and now she’s ready to find her forever home!
Here’s a report from Mama Darcy’s foster home:
“When she first came to us, Mama Darcy was miserable, most likely because of the terrible amount of pain she was in from her infected mouth. She was also in heat, despite just having had a litter of kittens in April. Mama Darcy was surrendered by her owner to HAS on account of having too many animals in the home, so we can only imagine the environment she lived in prior to ending up at the shelter. She was surrendered with her kittens, Tucker and Peewee, and although the kittens were only 11 weeks old, she had already disowned them and was very obviously unhappy with their presence. She was very hostile towards them at first, but her aggression has lessened with time, most likely because she’s had dental surgery to remove several teeth and is finally pain-free. Although she still seems annoyed by the kittens’ presence and boundless energy, she is much calmer now. Thankfully, she’s also now been spayed so she won’t ever have to deal with being in heat or having another litter of kittens.
Mama Darcy is a sweet girl, although she has been somewhat timid around our cats. We have not let her fully integrate with them, as they tend to bully newcomers and we do not want to traumatize her, but we have let her out of the foster room to explore a bit with our other cats under strict supervision. She doesn’t usually get very far, though, before running back into the foster room, which is her safe space. Unfortunately for Mama Darcy, who no longer wants to be a mama, staying in the foster room means being stuck with Tucker and Peewee, who are very frisky kittens and don’t understand why she doesn’t want to play or have anything to do with them. Despite her annoyance with the kittens, I think she would be fine with another (calm) adult cat, but I also think she would be fine with being the only cat in the house. Mama Darcy has a lot of potential to be a wonderful and affectionate companion. She seems to crave affection and will let me pet her and give her chin rubs, but she will also let me know when she’s had enough with a pointed meow or a gentle swat (like most cats). Any time she’s been away from Tucker and Peewee, though, she’s been quick to jump on my lap for affection and has become somewhat of a different cat. For that reason, I think she needs a quiet and calm home of her own with space to explore, climb, play, relax, and nap in the sun. I think Mama Darcy needs someone who is patient; someone who will give her lots of attention and will also give her space when she needs it. Are you that special someone?
