Gabby
Gemini and Gabby were two of several animals brought to Hamilton Animal Services due to an eviction/hoarding situation. They spent a few weeks at HAS before we were able to rescue them when a foster home opened up. HAS were given no history (medical or otherwise) for Gemini and Gabby, and it is assumed neither of them were spayed. Gabby had an issue with mobility. She could get around okay, but was a bit wobbly and her back end would give out on her at times. Both cats had quite big bellies, though neither cat was pregnant. They were both very sweet senior kitties.
Gabby had an appointment at Animal Hospital of Stoney Creek, and we were given very sad news. Gabby’s big belly was full of fluid. So much so, that there was a lot of pressure on her organs, and they were almost not visible on her xray because of the fluid. Gabby’s bloodwork showed that she likely had cancer in her liver and it was causing her liver to fail. This is what was causing the fluid to accumulate in her abdomen and very likely also resulting in her mobility issues. The amount of fluid and the advanced stage of her condition both prevented any kind of surgical intervention. Draining the fluid was also not an option at this stage. Poor Gabby had been suffering for a long time.
After discussions with several vets at the clinic, it was decided that palliative care, pain management and lots of love from her foster mom were the best thing for Gabby. For the first few days after her diagnosis, Gabby was still eating, drinking, purring and handing out head bonks, but then her health quickly began to decline. After being in our care for only ten days, Gabby’s body was shutting down. She stopped eating, and wouldn’t move from a spot under a table. The light in her eyes was gone. She was telling her foster mom it was time. Foster mom took Gabby to the vet, and held her right until the end.
Rest in peace, sweet Gabby. We’re so sorry we couldn’t make you better, but we’re happy you were surrounded by love and warmth for the short time we had with you.
Thank you to the vets and staff at Animal Hospital of Stoney Creek for your expert care and compassion. And thank you to Gabby’s foster mom for being there for her when she needed someone most.
