Lorraine
* Lorraine and Florence found their forever home together with an amazing person! Woo hoo! *
One Last Chance rescue reached out to us for help when two degus were surrendered to a shelter in Quebec. Thank you to One Last Chance and to Freedom Drivers Animal Rescue Transport volunteers for getting the degus to us safely.
Lorraine and Florence‘s first stop was to Spencer Creek Animal Hospital for a check up. We’re glad they got to us when they did because Florence’s teeth were extremely overgrown and she was likely in a lot of pain. Florence’s top teeth are broken, so it allowed for her bottom teeth to grow longer than they should. Thankfully, Dr. Stubbs was able to trim her teeth and they’re at a normal length now. They had several more vet visits, and Florence had many more teeth trims in the months they’ve been with us, and now they’re finally ready to find their forever home!
Lorraine and Florence should see a small animal specialist vet visits at least once a year to ensure they are in good health. Visit this page to see a list of small animal vets in the Hamilton and surrounding area.
Here’s a note from Florence and Lorraine’s foster dad:
“Florence and Lorraine are two cute little degus. They enjoy running in their wheel, climbing on your hand for treats, warming up under a blanket, dust baths, and chewing toys. They are very bonded with each other. Their favourite foods are oatmeal and banana, and they enjoy lettuce as well. They enjoy people and greet us when we open the cage. Florence has a bald chest area from her previous oral health needs, but she is still just as chipper and energetic as her friend Lorraine.”
Ladybird recommends Critter Nation cages. They are hands down the most spacious, and best quality enclosure for small animals on the market. They come in single and double sizes, and can be modified and customized to create enrichment and provide comfort. Their design and solid manufacturing almost entirely eliminates the possibility of accidental escape. Critter Nation cages are available (or can be ordered) at most local pet supply stores.
