Whoopie
* Whoopie found her forever home with amazing people! Yay! *
We rescued 20 dwarf hamsters from a Quebec shelter. They were surrendered to the shelter by their owner.
The hamsters had a vet visit shortly after their rescue where their genders were confirmed, and they were all given a clean bill of health.
Whoopie had three babies with her when she arrived, one of which sadly passed way shortly after their arrival. A few days into their time with us, Whoopie decided she was done with being a mother, and started to turn on her remaining babies, Crinkle and Fudge. We separated them from her, and she was much happier being a solo hammy. But, we found out a week after they were separated that she was only done being a mama to those babies, because she was about to have more! Whoopie gave birth to five babies on December 28th. We were really hoping we wouldn’t have any pregnancies with this group of hammies, but we weren’t so lucky this time. You can see videos below of the babies as they grew.
After her second batch of babies were weened, Whoopie had a small mammary abscess that needed to be treated, and she took her medication like a champ. The abscess healed up perfectly and now Whoopie is ready to find her forever home!
Whoopie is pretty friendly and isn’t too bad about being handled. Caution should still be taken when handling to prevent falls/injury, and small children should always be supervised. Whoopie takes full advantage of the large space provided by her bin cage, and she LOVES running in her wheel. As well as store bought hamster food, the Whoopie’s foster family offer her a variety of veggies. Favourites so far have been carrot, kale, cucumber and peas.
Hamsters must be provided a large living space with ample bedding for burrowing and tunnelling. Bedding like Carefresh brand is best for them. Most store bought cages do not provide enough space, and Habitrail cages are not recommended. Ladybird does not condone the use of plastic hamster balls. They are dangerous and detrimental to a hamsters physical and mental wellbeing. Exercise pens, or enclosed areas that are free of escape routes are the best way for hamsters to explore safely.
Whether you’re a first time hamster adopter or an experienced hammy person, we strongly recommend viewing Victoria Raechel’s videos for tips on proper hamster care and education.
Hamsters need space…
Hamsters need more living space than the typical “hamster cage” you’ll find at local pet store. Here are some examples of fantastic hamster enclosures that give hamsters room to explore, burrow, and live their best hammy life!
