Bernadette
* Bernadette found her forever home with lovely people! Yay! *
New mommy Bernadette was rescued from Quebec with her wee babies; Bijou, Beebo and Button, as well as three other adult hedgehogs – Biscuit, Blondie, and Brandi.
These hedgehogs were part of a group of more than twenty who ended up at a shelter after their owner was arrested. Big thanks to All Creatures Rescue and the other organizations who took in the other hedgies.
These poor girls were in rough shape. They had a variety of issues including skin infections, eye infections, and some have missing toes and feet.
Bernadette arrived into our care with three babies. Sadly, one of them passed away shortly after arriving. Bernadette raised her two remaining babies very well, and now she is ready to find her forever home!
On the leg where Bernadette is missing a foot, the stump had some scabbing, but it has cleared up now. She has a bit of difficulty with that leg. It’s likely that the injury is not very old, and it seems she’s trying to get used to the foot not being there. Bernadette does get around okay though, despite what must be a very strange feeling for her. She likes to run in her wheel and she enjoys exploring time outside of her cage in the evenings.
Like all hedgehogs, Bernadette will poop while she runs in her wheel. It can get very messy, so potential adopters will need to be prepared to clean the wheel every day, and also be sure Bernadette’s feet stay clear of stuck-on poop. Having Bernadette walk around a sink with a small amount of warm water helps loosen up stuck on feces for easier cleaning.
Bernadette would do best in a home with no small children, as she can get a bit ornery at times. She’s friendly most of the time, but she can get moody and will try to bite. Can’t blame her though! She’s been through a lot.
A hedgehog experienced home would be great for her.
