Crumpet
* Crumpet found his forever home with an amazing family! Woo hoo! *
Crumpet was found in downtown Hamilton, hiding under a vehicle in a busy neighbourhood when he was discovered by a passerby and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. He had an abscess on his jaw, so shelter staff sent him to the vet to be checked out. The vet did a minor surgery on the abscess, and they sent him back to the shelter to wait out his stray time. Unfortunately, Crumpet was not claimed by his owner, and the surgery and medication didn’t work to fix the abscess. 👎
HAS staff reached out to us for help, and we were happy to take this sweet guy in. We had Crumpet neutered and the abscess was debrided. We hoped that would be the end of his medical needs. We were wrong. Boo urns. At his re-check appointment, it was discovered that there was infection behind one of his teeth, and the tooth popped right out during the exam! So, Crumpet had to go back on antibiotics for a couple of weeks. After another re-check, the decision was made to remove the two back molars since they were still giving Crumpet trouble. The surgery went great and Crumpet recovered well in his foster home. At a follow-up visit, it was noticed that the jaw cyst had returned, so it was drained again.
Since this has been a recurring issue, potential adopters need to be able to keep on top of checking for the cyst and getting Crumpet in to have it drained when needed. Our vets have advised that the cyst may eventually go away on its own, but there’s no way to know for sure. The vet thinks it may have to be drained or lanced approximately every 10 weeks or so if it does return. Debriding the cyst again would be hard on Crumpet, since he’s already been through several surgeries, and another debriding would not be a guarantee that the cyst would not return. The cyst does not cause him any pain or discomfort, and his vet says as long as his adopters are able to get him in for treatment when needed, he is ready to find his forever home.
Here’s a note from Crumpet’s foster home:
“Crumpet is a friendly, playful and gentle bunny who is looking for an amazing new family. He is healed up from all his medical procedures, and is ready to brings smiles to his lucky new home. Crumpet loves to be around people, he will hop up on the couch and lay with you to watch tv. He has an incredible temperament and doesn’t bite or shy away from attention. He loves playing with his toys and will take toys from you and throw them around. He is litter trained so he will return to his litter box to relieve himself and is not a destructive chewer. He has been handled by many kids (from 4 yrs +up) so if you have a quiet, bunny loving child in your home then Crumpet will waste no time becoming fast friends. Crumpet has been exposed to small quiet dogs but would likely hide if they entered his pen area. Crumpet has no interest in being outdoors. As long as he’s fed, played with, snuggled and has a clean pen to keep him safe while he plays, then Crumpet will love you forever. He enjoys falling asleep to bunny soothing music on YouTube, fav treats are are plain cheerios, blueberries and he gets a piece of banana for an/pm snack. He munches fresh kale along with hay/pellets and a fresh bottle of water through the day.
We have had so much fun with this very special bunny and we will be sad to see him go but he’s finally ready to settle into his forever home so anyone looking for a perfect bunny with lots of love to give and is sure to bring a lot of laughs to their home… this is the man!
Scratch his bum gently above his tail and he licks your hand, lay on the floor and he’ll sniff/dig and hop back and forth over you from head to toe. Slumber party on the floor in his pen area…you’ll wake up with him passed out by your feet. He’s a rabbit on the outside but he’s all puppy dog personality.”
* Crumpet has been vaccinated against Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHDV).

Rabbits need lots of space…
Our fostered rabbits are housed in x-pens or similar enclosures so they have lots of room to move around when they aren’t out for floor time. Some of our rabbits are free range in their foster home.
Commercially made pet store rabbit cages are far too small to allow rabbits to stretch out and move around with ease. Here are some examples of great enclosures, and rooms set up for free roaming bunnies.
