Sailor
* Sailor has been adopted by lovely people! Yay! *
Sailor was brought into Hamilton Animal Services after his owner passed away. It’s not known how long Sailor was alone in the apartment after his owner died, but the state of the apartment and the condition of his cage were both very unpleasant. Poor Sailor had plucked his chest and, and his nails were overgrown when he got to the shelter.
We were happy to spring Sailor out of the shelter and he went straight to the vet for a health check and a DNA test to confirm his gender. The test confirmed that he is male.
Sailor will spend some time in his foster home where we can get to know him, and where hopefully he will begin to heal from his ordeal. Poor little bird has been through a lot.
When he’s ready, Sailor will be made available for adoption.
Welcome to Ladybird, Sailor! We’re so happy you’re here!
March 17/24 UPDATE
Our sweet Sailor continued to pluck himself after arriving to his foster home. So much so that he opened up a large wound. He had surgery to repair it, and thankfully surgery went well. He wore a bird specific collar right after surgery to keep him from opening up the wound again, and when he went back to his foster home, he was fitted with a little vest to keep him safe and comfortable.
We hope Sailor will heal well so that he can start the search for his forever home when he’s ready.
We love you, Sailor!
June 5/24 UPDATE
Sailor is finally ready to find his forever home!
Here’s a note from his foster mom:
“Sailor has been in foster care for a few months now in hopes his feather plucking would resolved with a balanced diet and behavioural changes. Unfortunately, even with the best care and loving attention from his foster family, his self destructive behaviour continues. He wears a small vest to cover the areas he damages. The vest protects his skin from trauma and has allowed some of the feathers to grow back. Sailor also receives an anti-anxiety medication nightly that helps reduce some of the plucking. During the day he is very very chatty and loves to take baths. He gets time out of his cage to fly around but prefers to ride on shoulders. Sailor likes to be handled but can be a bit nippy if scared or nervous. As his condition is chronic he will need continued specialized veterinary care with someone who is knowledgeable about birds, can monitor his medications, and keep an eye on his condition. The vest he wears needs to stay on at all times. They are easily made from baby socks and need replacement and adjustments as they get worn and damaged. He is a lovely boy and with the right environment and person he will make a wonderful friend.”
