Harry
* Harry found his forever home with an amazing family! Yay! *
After importing him from overseas when he was a puppy and owning him for six years, Harry’s owners surrendered him to Hamilton Animal Services because their children weren’t interested in him any longer. Our hearts broke for this poor dog when shelter staff contacted us about him. Harry was extremely stressed in the shelter. He didn’t understand what was happening to him or where his family was. Such a sad situation.
We were very thankful that a foster home opened up so we could get Harry out of the shelter quickly. He’s now settling in with his foster family and he’ll have a vet visit soon so we can sort out if he needs any medical treatment. Despite being very confused about everything happening to him, Harry still has a happy smile and waggy tail for everyone he meets.
Welcome to Ladybird, Harry! We’re so happy you’re here!
July 1st, 2024 UPDATE
Harry has been doing great in his foster home. He does have some issues with resource guarding and cat chasing, which his foster family are working on with him.
He has an appointment for dental surgery next week, and we’ll post another update afterwards.
We very much appreciate all the lovely folks who have reached out to us about adopting Harry. We are trying to keep up with responding, but we cannot give an exact date when he will be made available for adoption. When he is ready, the link to the adoption application will be found at the top of this page. Please check out our adoption process as well. You’ll find the link to that below.
Go, Harry!
July 9/24 UPDATE
Harry did great for his dental surgery. He had several extractions and a good cleaning of his remaining teeth. His foster family are giving him extra love and spoiling while he recovers.
Good job, Harry!
August 11/24 UPDATE
Harry is ready for his forever home! Here’s a note from his foster mom:
“Harry, or Hare-Bear as we lovingly call him, has made some big strides since we first met him. The day he was picked up from Hamilton Animal Services by Ladybird, he was very anxious, and I was told he had some resource guarding tendencies. I was not sure how deeply this ran. When I brought him home, he was very protective of his crate and his food bowl. We took it slow with him and made sure to read his body language very carefully. He ate all his meals separated from my other pets, just to be safe, and to give him some personal space of his own. I don’t think he’s lived with cats before, because he seemed very stimulated by their presence, and would bark and chase them. As the weeks passed, his anxiety lessened, and the cat chasing decreased. He was becoming a very happy lovey boy. He likes the other dogs in the house, however when he first meets dogs he has some antisocial traits; he’ll bark and pull on the leash to meet the other dog. After the initial greeting he’s okay with other dogs.
After 3 weeks, we realized that Harry had some anxiety that was not going away. At the recommendation of his veterinarian, we started him on an anxiety medication. He’s made some amazing progress on this medication. He’s not as suspicious, does not hide in his crate as much, he asks to be pet, asks for snuggles on the bed, and his barking has decreased. We also noticed he does have some allergies of some sort. He had a very red itchy chin, chest, and belly, but has responded wonderfully to his special food and allergy medication. Unfortunately his resource guarding has not gone away. It has declined as we’ve built a relationship, and with the help of his anxiety medication. Due to this I do not believe he would be a good fit for a family with small children.
Harry needs someone who has some experience with dogs, and dog body language. Someone who has the patience and understanding in dealing with his resource guarding, and to further his basic training when it comes to barking, and manners regarding the front door. Harry would not be a good fit for first-time dog owners.
We’ve been fostering Harry since June 19th, it took him a little while to show us his true personality, but we’ve discovered he’d make a wonderful pet, he’s a very happy, sweet, silly boy. He loves to bark and chase flies, and when no one is watching, eat them as well. 🙂 ”
