Dahlia

Dahlia- photo by Lori Metcalfe

* Dahlia has been adopted by wonderful people! Woo hoo! * Dahlia came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. This poor girl was a mess when she arrived at the shelter. She was extremely matted, she had feces stuck all over her back end, and she had lesions/fur loss below her tail and on the backs of her legs. To top it off, Dahlia is very overweight and she was suffering from a serious urinary infection. Despite how she must have been feeling, Dahlia had a sweet smile and a tail wag for everyone she met. She’s a lovely,…   read more >>

* Plum and Puddin’ found their forever home with lovely people! Yay! * Plum and Puddin’ were abandoned outdoors in a small box. Thankfully someone found them and brought them to Hamilton Animal Services. We will never understand how someone can think that dumping pets in this way is okay. Dumping a pet is the cruel and cowardly way out. There are always alternatives to this, and there are many resources available. Abandoning a pet is never the answer. That said, Plum and Puddin’ have gone from what will be the worst days of their lives, to the absolute best….   read more >>

Gwen

Gwen

* Gwen found her forever home with lovely people! Yay! * Humane Society of Durham Region reached out to us for help when they received a hedgehog that had been abandoned by her owner. We were happy to take this prickly little girl in. She’ll have a vet visit soon, and we’ll have more info once she has settled into her foster home. We were sure to tell Gwen that she is safe, and will never be abandoned again. Welcome to Ladybird, Gwen! We’re so happy you’re here! * UPDATE December 22nd, 2023 * This was unexpected! Louie

* Louie has found his forever home with awesome people! Woohoo! * Louie was brought to Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. He spent an extended time at the shelter, but no owner came forward to claim him. Poor Louie’s teeth are really bad. His mouth must be hurting him quite a lot. He came into the shelter with a scrape on his nose, but it’s not known what caused it. Louie was extremely depressed at the shelter. He didn’t want to leave the bed in his kennel, and was reluctant to interact with the staff. When he did, all…   read more >>

Edwina

* Isabelle and Edwina found their forever home with lovely people! Woo hoo! * In November 2023, Isabelle and Edwina were brought to Hamilton Animal Services as strays. These poor little kittens were terrified. They were very thin and were absolutely infested with fleas. Shelter staff treated them for the fleas and made them comfortable in their cage while they waited to be claimed. No owner came forward to claim them (how shocking), so the shelter had them spayed and put them up for adoption. Because of their shy nature, Isabelle and Edwina were passed over by any potential adopters….   read more >>

Want to own a rabbit? It’s not a relationship you can just jump into

Photo by Laura Shantora Nelles: Toronto Sun

Bunnies require years-long commitment, but are excellent pets to right home Toronto Sun By: Laura Shantora Nelles Hippity hoppity, Easter’s on its way. There are plenty of ways to celebrate the upcoming vernal equinox and delight in the first signs of spring and while a chocolate rabbit may make its way into your basket this year, a pet rabbit makes a terrible Easter gift. In the weeks and months following Easter every year, unwanted rabbits are discarded at shelters, rescues or worse — outside. While these adorable animals make poor gifts, they are excellent pets for the right home, but…   read more >>

Seraphina

* Seraphina has been adopted to a wonderful person! Woot! * Seraphina’s owner surrendered her to a Quebec shelter because their hamster had an accidental litter, and because Seraphina has malocclusion, meaning her teeth are not exactly aligned properly. The shelter reached out for help via One Last Chance rescue placement, and we were more than happy to take this little girl in. Big thank you to Freedom Drivers volunteers for getting Seraphina to us safely all the way from Quebec on Christmas Eve. In her foster home, Seraphina is housed in a 75 gallon tank with lots of different…   read more >>

Brillo

* Brillo found his forever home with lovely people! Woot! * * December 21st, 2023 * Shortly after her arrival, Gwen gave birth. We had no idea she was pregnant, but she had four babies during the night. Quite a surprise for her foster mom to wake up to. Unfortunately, one baby didn’t make it, but the other three are doing well so far. Gwen is a VERY protective mom, and she’s telling off everyone who comes near her babies. Understandable, after everything she has been through. She just wants to keep her babies safe. If they stay healthy as…   read more >>

* Doris and Doreen have been adopted by wonderful people! Yippee! * We rescued Doris and Doreen from a shelter in Quebec. We weren’t told the circumstances of how they ended up at the shelter. Big thank you to Freedom Drivers organizers and volunteers for getting these cute girls to us safely. Doris and Doreen are lively little degus. They’re curious and friendly, but they’re still getting used to being handled. When she arrived, Doreen had an issue with her eyelids, but eye drops helped to clear it up. The vet gave Doris and Doreen a clean bill of health,…   read more >>

Marceline

* Marceline has been adopted by wonderful people, and she’ll have other cats to be friends with. Yay! * Marceline ended up at Burlington Animal Services with her siblings as a stray litter. All of her siblings were adopted, but the shelter noted that Marceline had a minor issue with her bum. It was very red and swollen. Because municipal shelters are limited in how much vet care they can provide, the shelter reached out to us for help. We were happy to get Marceline out of the shelter, and she went straight to the vet to get checked out….   read more >>

Ella

Ella

* Duke and Ella have been adopted by their foster family! Yay! * Duke and Ella were brought into Hamilton Animal Services as strays and they were not claimed. These two were showing serious signs of neglect. Their fur was matted and dirty, their teeth are horrendous, and Ella has a large, pendulous mammary tumour that almost touches the floor when she walks. Duke is not neutered, and it’s not likely that Ella is spayed. It’s possible they were used for breeding and were discarded when they got too old to produce puppies, but we will never know… Duke and…   read more >>

Jason

Jason

* We are shocked and saddened to report that Travis and Jason have both passed away. Everything went normally with their neuters, and both surgeries were routine and uneventful. But the next morning, Jason was struggling. He was rushed to the vet, but was sadly beyond help. As a precaution, Travis had an exam at the vet. He was behaving normally, so he was sent back to his foster home. Travis was doing well over the next few hours – active and eating, but the next morning, his foster family awakened to find he had passed away during the night….   read more >>
