Wallace

Wallace - photo by happytailspetphotography.ca

* Wallace found his forever home with amazing people! * Wallace came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. He was suffering from a very serious case of entropion. This is a condition in which a portion of the eyelid is inverted or folded inward against the eyeball. This is a painful condition, and poor Wallace had it quite badly in both eyes. HAS staff started him on eye medication, and they reached out to us to help once his stray time was done. We reached out to Dr. Strong, who specializes in eye conditions, and he was kind enough…   read more >>

Brody

* Brody found his forever home with an awesome person! * Brody came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray and was never claimed. Other than being a bit overweight, Brody seems in good health. He is a sweet guy, but he has a strange characteristic….He gets very snappy, but he doesn’t bite. He snaps when he’s happy/excited too, so it seems like a bad habit that nobody bothered to correct. It probably helps him get his way when people are afraid that he’ll bite them. Thankfully, the staff at Hamilton Animal Services could see beyond this “quirk” and gave…   read more >>

Beyond Easter Bunnies with Ladybird Animal Sanctuary

thefurbearers It’s the Easter long weekend and you know what that means – bunnies, chicks and other little critters are being discussed, if not bought, as presents. But as many of you know, little animals aren’t just gifts, they’re sentient beings who are a lifetime commitment, require love, patience, veterinary care, and many other things. A while back I spoke with my friend Lisa Winn from the Ladybird Animal Sanctuary about the subject of bunnies – not just why they shouldn’t be bought and sold as gifts, but what it means to accept a rabbit into your home and family….   read more >>

Stella

Stella

Stella was surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services by her owner because she was “not social.” Staff at HAS noticed Stella seemed to be having trouble breathing, so they reached out to us for help. We got Stella to the vet, and once they had her sedated for an xray, it was clear as to why Stella was breathing strangely… she was in an advanced stage of heart failure. Our vets advised that Stella’s condition was not treatable with medication or surgery. She was struggling to breathe and she was suffering. That was the last thing we wanted for her. The…   read more >>

Jelly Bean

Snickers and Jelly Bean showed up to Hamilton Animal services together as strays and no owner came forward for them. Jelly Bean was severely matted. So much so, her normally curled tail was stuck out straight because of the tangled and matted fur. To top it off, she was covered in tumours. Some larger than golf ball size. This poor little dog had been severely neglected. Our vets sent out samples of the tumours so we could sort out next steps for her.  We were devastated when we received the news the next day that the tumours were lymphoma, and…   read more >>

Snickers

Snickers - photo by Willow Bean Photography

* Snickers found his forever home with an amazing person! Yippee!!! * After spending some time with the wonderful people at K9 Balance in Blue Mountain, Snickers is ready to be adopted! He did really well in the “stay and learn” program there, and though he’ll still need stability and structure in his forever home, he’s made great strides with his training and he’s doing awesome. Here’s a note from Justine at K9 Balance: “Snickers is such a fun little guy! High energy and ready to run but also a great snuggler. He has learned to walk very nicely on…   read more >>

Graham Rockingham: Ladybird celebrates 1,000 animals saved

The Hamilton Spectator

The Hamilton Spectator, Hamilton Ontario By Graham Rockingham, Contributing Columnist It started out as a musical friendship and developed into a rescue mission that has found safe homes for 1,000 animals – dogs, cats, bunnies, turtles, hamsters, even rats. Melissa McClelland, Janine Stoll and Lisa Winn met some 15 years ago singing on the local club circuit, harmonizing their voices in a group called the Ladybird Sideshow. In recent years, the success of Whitehorse – the folk-rock partnership McClelland forged with her husband Luke Doucet – saw the Ladybirds singing together less and less. The friendship, however, stayed alive through…   read more >>

Alice

Alice

* Alice found her forever home with an amazing person! * At the end of February, Alice was found outdoors at Christie Conservation area in Flamborough. Thankfully someone spotted her and brought her to Hamilton Animal Services before she was killed by wildlife, or by the cold temperatures. She has a little bit of frost bite on her feet, but she’s otherwise in good health. Sadly, Alice’s situation seems to be yet another case of an owner releasing their pet into the wild, thinking the animal can survive on their own. Domestic rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and other…   read more >>

Benji

* Benji has been adopted to awesome people! * Benji was found in the laundry room of an apartment building in Hamilton and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. Either he escaped his home and made his way to the laundry room, or he was abandoned there by his owners. We’ll never know for sure. What we do know is that this wee rat is a sweetheart. He’s a bit shy, but doesn’t mind being handled. Benji got a clean bill of health at his vet visit, and now he’s ready to find his forever home! Ladybird recommends Critter Nation cages. They are…   read more >>

Jasmine

* Jasmine was adopted by her foster home! Yay! * We had a plan to rescue Jasmine from Hamilton Animal Services on November 21st. We had her vet visit and foster home all lined up, and we were excited to spring this wee baby bunny from the shelter. But today, we received word from the shelter that Jasmine wasn’t feeling well. Unfortunately, by the time a rabbit shows signs of illness, it might already be too late. Because they are prey animals, they will do their best to hide any kind of injury or sickness for as long as possible…   read more >>

Rudy

Rudy @ HAS

* Rudy found his forever home with a lovely person! * Rudy came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. He’s the tiniest, cutest little guy! And very friendly. We took Rudy straight from the shelter to the vet to be neutered, and he did great for his surgery. After hanging out in his foster home for a short time, Rudy found his forever home with an awesome person! Congrats Rudy!   Can’t adopt but want to help? Donations of Oxbow Adult Rabbit food, Timothy hay, newspaper based litter, and rabbit toys are always appreciated! Donations of these items can be…   read more >>

Cali

Cali - photo by Willow Bean Photography

* Cali has been adopted by the most wonderful family! Yay! * When her owner was incarcerated, Cali ended up at Hamilton Animal Services. After being released, Cali’s owner was aware that Cali was at HAS, but despite saying they were coming to get her, and being given a month to do so, they never showed up. We were happy to get Cali out of the shelter and took her straight to the vet for a check-up. Cali had an issue called “cherry eye” which is a prolapse of the third eyelid. She also needed to be spayed, and have…   read more >>

Rabbit crisis in Hamilton

Rabbits at HAS

We need your help! Currently, City of Hamilton Animal Services is dealing with a large influx of rabbits, and more are coming in as we write this. All the rabbits in the photo are at HAS now. Any or all of the female rabbits could be pregnant, and some have been giving birth in their cages. Normally, the rabbit “dumping” happens after Easter, when parents buy rabbits from pet stores/breeders as Easter gifts for their children, only to abandon or surrender them when they realize they’re not an easy “starter pet.” It happens year after year. But, here we are,…   read more >>

Cleo

Cleo - Photo by Willow Bean Photography

* Cleo has been adopted by a wonderful family! Yay! * Cleo came into Hamilton Animal Services after she was left behind by her owner. Her fur was quite matted, so HAS staff had to shave a few spots to make her more comfortable. When a foster home opened up, we were happy to rescue Cleo and get her to the vet for a check-up. The vet noted that she needed her teeth cleaned, and he couldn’t find a spay scar, though her body shape really does make her look like she is spayed. We got Cleo in for surgery,…   read more >>

Gladys

Gladys - photo by Willow Bean Photography

* Gladys has been adopted by her foster family! Yay! * Gladys came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. She was infested with fleas and her nails were overgrown. She’s missing all her teeth and her jaw is misaligned. She has a large lump on her abdomen, and muscle wasting on her back end. Gladys is a mess. It seems this poor senior girl was not properly cared for wherever she was living before she became a “stray.” Thankfully, Gladys has a healthy appetite and she can eat canned food without too much trouble. On her rescue day, we…   read more >>

Tiny (Monsieur Baguette)

* Tiny found his forever home with amazing people! * Tiny (a.k.a. Monsieur Baguette) was found as a stray and brought into Hamilton Animal Services. He had a microchip that traced to a vet clinic in Quebec, but there was no owner information listed. When Tiny arrived at HAS, his eyes were crusted shut, and he was so matted that HAS staff had to shave him down so he could walk properly. His teeth were rotten,  he had an infection in both ears,  skin issues, and some “old dog” lumps and bumps. Despite all this, Tiny had a wagging tail and…   read more >>

Morgan

Morgan

Margot and Morgan found their forever home together! Yay! Mama Margot came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. On February 17th, which was shortly after her arrival, Margot gave birth to five babies. Unfortunately, two of the babies passed away shortly after being born. We were happy to rescue Margot and her remaining babies Marcel, Madison, and Morgan when a spot opened up. Margot did a great job raising her babies, despite the fact she gave birth to a second litter on March 20th, while Morgan, Marcel and Madison were just over a month old. (!!) Turns out she…   read more >>
