Boots

Boots - Photo by Trevor Weeks

* Boots found his forever home with a lovely person! * Boots ended up at Hamilton Animal Services when his owner passed away. As you can see in the video, Boots has deformed front legs, but he gets around just fine. We got Boots the dental surgery he needed, and his legs were x-rayed. Our vets think the leg deformity isn’t an issue now, but he may develop arthritis at some point. Boots definitely needs to lose a few pounds, so he’s on a special weight loss diet now, but not on any medications. Boots would likely do best as…   read more >>

Peanut

Peanut - photo by Trevor Weeks

* Peanut found her forever home with Sarah McLachlan (!!!) * Wee Peanut was found alone on the street and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. At about four weeks old, she was too young to be away from her mama, and no one is sure how she became separated from her. We were happy to rescue Peanut from HAS and we put her in the very capable hands of Dr. Fleming from Guelph Animal Hospital. Peanut had an off and on upper respiratory virus that she was on medication for, and a few weeks later, she was finally healthy enough…   read more >>

Mia

Mia @ foster

Mia showed up to Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. When we rescued her from HAS, she was underweight, she had a terrible odour, bald spots, and she was covered in a rash. At her initial vet visit, she was switched to a special food, given flea and tick treatment, and the vet noted a murmur in her heart. An ultrasound found a mitral valve issue, but she was compensating well and her lungs were clear. She was well enough for dental work, so she had a good cleaning and two teeth were removed. Her foster home noticed that she continued…   read more >>

Gidget

Gidget @ foster

* Gidget found her forever home with lovely people! * Gidget ended up at Hamilton Animal Services when she was found outside alone. Little Gidget has a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia, which makes her very wobbly on her feet. She was a hissy kitten when she arrived (which is hilarious because she’s so wee), but she warmed up pretty quickly for cuddles. Gidget is doing great in her foster home, and now she’s ready to find her forever home! Here’s a note from Gidget: “Oh Hello There Human, My name is Gidget and I am a 3 month old female tortoiseshell…   read more >>

Donny Calzone

Donny Calzone - photo by Willow Bean Photography

* Donny Calzone found his forever home with a lovely family! * Donny Calzone came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray, and was not claimed by his owner. Donny is just the sweetest big lug of a dog! Friendly to everyone he meets, and very happy to get some pettin’ from anyone who will give it… When we rescued him, Donny had some health issues that need to be addressed. His ears were infected, his back end was infected, many of his teeth were rotted, and he needed to be neutered. Thankfully, Donny C is in the capable hands…   read more >>

Ginger

Ginger - photo by Willow Bean Photography

* Ginger found her forever home with a lovely person! * Ginger was surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services when her elderly owner was no longer able to care for her. She was very scared and shy at the shelter, but still okay to be handled. Ginger had some matting in her fur, so HAS staff gave her a shave down to make her more comfortable. We got Ginger the vet care she needed and she’s been doing great in her foster home. At 16 years old, this sweet girl certainly doesn’t look her age. We know she’ll be a lovely companion…   read more >>

Nugget

Nugget - photo by Trevor Weeks

Nugget found his forever home with lovely people! Nugget came from Hamilton Animal Services where he was brought in as a stray. This poor little guy was having a rough go. He had head tilt, he was wobbly on his feet, and something seemed to be off with his eyes. All of that didn’t stop him from being a sweet little purr machine though! We sent Nugget to Guelph Animal Hospital where he started treatment under the fabulous care of Dr. Fleming. He was neutered and x-rayed. X-rays didn’t show anything obvious as to what might be causing Nugget’s head tilt,…   read more >>

Bob

* Bob found his forever home with amazing people! And another pig to be friends with! * Blossom, Belinda and Bob were surrendered to a shelter in Quebec by their owner. We were happy to rescue this trio, with help from Freedom Driver Animal Transport volunteers, who brought them to us all the way from Quebec. Thank you Freedom Drivers! Unfortunately, Blossom, Belinda and Bob were housed together in their previous home, and it turned out Belinda was pregnant. We’re not sure if Bob is the father, or if there was another male guinea pig in the picture before this…   read more >>

Lydia

Lydia

Lydia arrived at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. She was a nice rabbit, but wobbly on her feet. When we pet Lydia, she was somewhat flinchy, and there was a specific spot on her side where you could feel her skin twitching. We got Lydia into the vet for a check-up. X-rays didn’t show anything unusual, but because the vet suspected nerve damage, Lydia was put on daily pain medication which she loved (thankfully!) Lydia’s x-rays were sent to a radiologist, and the radiologist identified two areas in Lydia’s spine where it looked like discs were bulging or slipping…   read more >>

The Easter aftermath….again

Rabbits needing rescue

You’ve heard us talk about how rabbits purchased at Easter time are usually abandoned shortly after the novelty wears off. Well, here we are a few months after Easter, and this is the sad reality of why we try to spread the message of not purchasing rabbits as Easter gifts. The rabbits pictured here are waiting for rescue at Hamilton Animal Services, Toronto Animal Services, and in high-volume shelters in Quebec. We’ve been asked by all of these shelters to help with the overwhelming number of rabbits they have currently. These are just a few of the hundreds of stray/abandoned/surrendered…   read more >>

Luigi

Luigi

* Mario and Luigi found their forever home with lovely people! * Mario and Luigi came into Toronto Animal Services as “strays.” They’re such cute little pigs, and they’re very bonded to each other, so we’re asking that Mario and Luigi be adopted together. A single pig is a lonely pig! Mario and Luigi will run and hide in their house when you come into their room, but once they are sure you mean them no harm, they’ll come out and chat with you. They aren’t fond of being picked up (like most guinea pigs) but once they’re comfortable in…   read more >>

Chili

Chili @ foster

* Sadly, Chili passed away unexpectedly of unknown causes in his foster home. It’s likely his age and health issues caught up with him. We’re glad we could give him a few months of proper food, care and a lot of love before his passing. Rest in peace sweet Chili. You were a very special piggy. We’ll never forget you.     Chili ended up at Toronto Animal Services as a stray. This poor guy is so sweet, but he’s got some health issues. Malocclusion being one, and impaction the other. Impaction is common in older male pigs. Basically, Chili’s…   read more >>

Clementine

Clementine @ foster

* Clementine found her forever home with lovely people! * Sweet Clementine found herself at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. She certainly belonged to someone at some point because she has been spayed and declawed, but nobody came forward to claim her. HAS staff gave Clementine a flea treatment (she was infested with fleas!) and she seemed much happier afterwards. We were happy to rescue Clementine from HAS when her stray time was done, and we got her the dental surgery she so desperately needed. She did great for the surgery. A short time later, she developed what seemed…   read more >>

Maggie

Maggie

* Jasper and Maggie found their forever home with lovely people! * Jasper and Maggie ended up at Hamilton Animal Services when their owner passed away. We took them to the avian specialist vet at Burloak Animal Hospital where they got a thorough check up. Jasper is in good health, other than a bit of stress to his tail feathers. Maggie has some congenital abnormalities to her beak, and some issues with her feathers, but the vet thought she was healthy otherwise. Neither of the birds need any special medication or care. Just some good quality food and a stress…   read more >>

Chicago

Chicago

* Boston and Chicago found their forever home with lovely people! * Boston, Chicago and Kansas came to us all the way from a shelter in Quebec. Big thank you to all the volunteers from Freedom Drivers – Animal Rescue Transport for getting the rats to us from so far away! From what we have learned, Boston, Chicago, Kansas were surrendered by their owner, after they had been used for quite some time as breeders for snake food.  We’re happy we can now give them the relaxed retirement life they so deserve! At their vet visit, we got a bit of upsetting…   read more >>
