Kiwi
* Kiwi found his forever home with a lovely person! Congrats Kiwi! * Kiwi was surrendered to Toronto Animal Services by his owner. Poor Kiwi was in rough shape. His beak was deformed. He is missing parts of his toes and there were wounds on his feet. He had a pretty bad mite infestation when he arrived, so the shelter started him on treatment. Kiwi wasn’t doing well in the shelter, so TAS reached out to us for help. We couldn’t say no to this poor guy. We sent Kiwi straight from the shelter to the avian specialist vet at… read more >>
Abe
* Abe found his forever home with lovely people! Yay! * Abe was found as a stray and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. When he arrived at HAS, Abe was extremely dehydrated and infested with fleas. He was very itchy, had patchy fur, and an issue with his eye. We know Abe belonged to someone at some point because he is already neutered. No owner came forward to claim him, despite being at the shelter long past his stray time. When a foster home opened up, we were happy to get Abe out of the shelter and into a foster… read more >>
Diesel
* Diesel found his forever home with lovely people! Yay! * Windsor Humane Society reached out to us when they were overwhelmed with small animals. We were able to take in Diesel the gerbil, Dolores the hamster and Badoo the guinea pig. Diesel is a happy and active little guy. He loves to burrow and dig, and it’s so fun to watch him create elaborate tunnels through his bedding. Diesel was given a clean bill of health at his vet visit, and now he’s ready for his forever home! We’d love if Diesel could find a home where he could live… read more >>
Mitsou
UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2nd, 2021 I want to tell you the story of my friend Mitsou. Two weeks ago she passed away and left a little paw print space in my heart. Her time with me was brief, but special. Ten years ago when I co-founded Ladybird Animal Sanctuary with my friend’s Lisa Winn and Janine Stoll I knew that sadly I wouldn’t be able to be a part of the fostering team given my constant touring schedule with my band Whitehorse. Well, a global pandemic hit 😱😱😱 and suddenly I was home all the time with my family. I told… read more >>
Hamilton charity offering sanctuary to difficult to care for shelter animals
The Silhouette, McMaster University By: Pallavi Mukherjee, Contributor For over a decade, Ladybird Animal Sanctuary has rescued abandoned, neglected and abused animals, while hoping to establish their own farmhouse one day Melissa McClelland, Janine Stoll and Lisa Winn have been close friends for years. They met through their music and started their own music group, the Ladybird Sideshow in 2001. One evening some 11 years ago, the conversation steered towards animals. It was then they realized how many of them are abandoned or given up to shelter homes, and if these homes could no longer hold onto them, the animals… read more >>
Alice
* Alice found her forever home with wonderful people! Woo hoo! * Alice came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray and was not claimed by her owner. She’s such a chubby girl, she can’t clean her own bum, so shelter staff had to clean her up when she arrived into their care. They also treated Alice for a flea infestation. She was hissy when she first arrived at the shelter, but warmed up to staff during her time there. We got Alice out of the shelter and into a foster home. At Alice’s first vet appointment, her bum was… read more >>
Miss Nibbles
* Miss Nibbles found her forever home with lovely people, and other rats! Yay! * Miss Nibbles was rescued from a shelter in Quebec. Thank you One Last Chance and Freedom Drivers volunteers for getting this sweet rat to us safely. When she arrived at the shelter, Miss Nibbles’ entire body was covered in scabs and wounds. We weren’t given any history on Miss Nibbles, so we don’t know for sure what happened to her, but the wounds look similar to bite marks, so she may have been attacked by other rats she was living with. By the time Miss Nibbles made it to… read more >>
Drizella
* Anastasia and Drizella found their forever home with wonderful people! Woo hoo! * We received this message from Kingston Humane Society: “44 rats were dumped in a recycling bin on a local trail in a small creek. Seven of them drowned, but we managed to catch and save the 37 remaining. Looking for help to place them.” How could we say no? Anastasia and Drizella are two of the six rats we were able to take in from this group. They’re shy and aren’t used to being handled, but they’re getting better every day. Because of their shyness, these… read more >>

Juarez
* Darwin, Blaster and Juarez found their forever home together with awesome people! Yippee! * Darwin, Juarez and Blaster were rescued from Lincoln County Humane Society. Darwin’s eye issue was beyond the shelter’s medical capacity, so they reached out to us for help. We got Darwin, Blaster and Juarez out of the shelter and into a foster home where they could have a large living space together. The pigs were given a clean bill of health at their vet visit, other than Darwin’s eye. It was likely an old injury that healed badly, and the eye needed to be removed… read more >>

Mya
Sad news. We had to say goodbye to our permanent resident, Mya. Her many medical issues finally caught up with her and we had to peacefully let her go. Our hearts are broken, and we’re sending many hugs to Mya’s forever foster family. We’re so thankful Mya had wonderful people to love and care for her for so long. Mya’s foster mom, Julia, wrote a beautiful tribute to Mya, that you can read below. Sleep well, sweet Mya. We’ll never forget you. 💔 “In 2016, a call went out for any homes that would be interested in fostering an older,… read more >>
Boone
* Boone has been adopted by the most wonderful people! Congrats Boone! * When Hamilton Animal Services sent us photos of an injured stray rabbit, we couldn’t say no. Poor Boone had several serious injuries – puncture wounds (likely caused by an animal attack) a split lip, broken teeth, and other cuts and scrapes. The severity of the injuries indicated that he likely went through more than just being attacked by an animal, but we will never know for sure. Boone went straight from the shelter to the vet for treatment, and he was transferred to an experienced bunny foster… read more >>

No one came forward to claim Lincoln, and we were happy to take him into our care when a foster home opened up. Lincoln is a very sweet rat. He’s a bit shy, but friendly and curious. Snack time is definitely his favourite time! We had Lincoln neutered, as neutering him gives him more of a chance at a forever home with other rats. Because a single rat is a lonely rat, and nobody wants that. Lincoln… read more >>

* Elton found his forever home with lovely people, and he’ll have another kitty to be friends with! Yay! * Cher, Elton and Josh arrived at Hamilton Animal Services as strays and were not claimed. We were happy to get these adorable babies out of the shelter and into a foster home. They were quite shy at first, but they warmed up to their foster mom with a bit of time.
