Lupin
On January 12,2020, Lupin passed away suddenly in her foster home of unknown causes.
Our hearts go out to her foster mom, and to her cage mate Lotus.
Rest in peace Lupin. We won’t ever forget you.
Someone dumped more than twenty rats into a ditch on the side of a highway in Quebec. Thankfully, a passerby saw what was happening and pulled over. They reached out to the local animal services who came to help collect the rats from the ditch and take them to the shelter. You can see the story here.
Ottawa Rat Rescue stepped in and took all the males from the shelter. We rescued eight females that we named Lemon, Lime, Lavender, Lace, Lentil, Licorice, Lupin and Lotus. Big thanks to Freedom Drivers Animal Transport volunteers for getting the rats to us all the way from Quebec!
Because they were abandoned along with male rats there was a possibility that they were pregnant. So we waited out the 21 to 28 day gestation period, and thankfully, no babies! They were treated for mites, and hey got a clean bill of health at the vet. Now they’re ready to be adopted!
Lemon and Lime found their forever home. Lavender, Lace, Lentil, Licorice, Lupin and Lotus are still waiting.
Lupin and Lotus are being housed together, so we are asking they be adopted as a pair. The other four are all in a large Critter Nation cage together, and we’d like them to be adopted in pairs as well.
We don’t think these girls received a lot of attention in their last home as they can be quite shy about handling. They need a forever home with someone who has rat experience and who will be very patient with them. They are not suitable rats for small children.

Please adopt Lavender, Lace, Lentil, Licorice, Lupin and Lotus!
Ladybird recommends Critter Nation cages. They are hands down the most spacious, and best quality enclosure for small animals on the market. They come in single and double sizes, and can be modified and customized to create enrichment and provide comfort. Their design and solid manufacturing almost entirely eliminates the possibility of accidental escape. Critter Nation cages are available (or can be ordered) at most local pet supply stores.
Can’t adopt but want to help?
Monetary donations are always needed, but if you’d like to donate something specifically for the rats in our care, donations of rat food, small pet blankets (used for cage lining), rat hammocks and fleece liners for Critter Nation cages are very much appreciated!
