Agnes
* Gilda and Agnes found their forever home together with a wonderful family! Yay! *
Someone put four guinea pigs in a box, and then left the box behind a school in Hamilton. It’s not known how long the pigs were alone there after they were abandoned, but as you can see in the photos, the box had quite a lot of pig poop in it.
Thankfully, someone found the box and called Hamilton Animal Services. At the pigs’ arrival at the shelter, the girls were separated from the boys, and they were given clean cages and proper food and water.
After a short time, the two boys were adopted through HAS’ adoption program, but because it was unknown if the females were pregnant, they asked us to help. We were happy to take the girls in, and their foster mom named them Gilda and Agnes.
They had a vet visit and got a clean bill of health. Because there was a possibility they could have been pregnant, we waited the full gestation period starting from the day they were separated from the males, and thankfully no babies! Now Gilda and Agnes are ready fo find their forever home!
Here’s a note from their foster home:
“Preparing food for Agnes & Gilda is comparable to winning on Master Chef. These foodies are enthusiastic and very appreciative munchers, squealing with delight at the sound of the fridge being opened. They are currently being fostered in a home with two dogs and seem unbothered by the barking. Both girls are becoming more comfortable with handling and will sit on your lap and munch on dandelion leaves.”

Guinea pigs need much more room than the typical pet store guinea pig cages offer. Here are some websites that have great examples of the type of cages pigs can live happily in, so that they have lots of room to move around and explore:
