Itchy
We’re sad to report that Itchy wasn’t able to go to the forever home that was waiting for him. He developed several cysts (internal and external) that have not cleared up with medication, and unfortunately surgery is not an option. Because it’s not possible to get him to be healthy enough to be adopted, he’ll stay in our care until his quality of life allows. Itchy is being kept comfortable on pain medication and he’s being spoiled by his foster family.
We hope for a forever home for all our rescued animals, but sometimes it just isn’t meant to be. Thanks to our generous donors, we’re able to care for “unadoptable” animals like Itchy and give them the best care for how ever much time they have with us.
Windsor Humane Society reached out for help when they received an overwhelming number of guinea pigs. We were happy to assist and we took in Itchy and Scratchy. They were surrendered to the shelter because their owner no longer wanted them. These two boys were super cute, but they were extremely shy. Doesn’t seem like Itchy and Scratchy were handled much in their previous home, but their foster family worked on helping them be more comfortable around people.
Sadly, Scratchy passed away suddenly of unknown causes. We got Itchy into the vet for a check-up to be sure he was okay, and he got a clean bill of health. Itchy was the shyer of the two, and we know he was very much missing his friend.
We had Itchy neutered, and he had an abdominal abscess repaired at the same time. He’s now healed from his surgery and ready to find his forever home.
A single guinea pig is a lonely guinea pig, so we’re asking that Itchy have a friend in his forever home. The best combination for bonding is male and female, when one or both are fixed, of course! Two males can bond, but it is a lot tougher. Bonding guinea pigs can take a lot of time and will require a lot of patience from their caregivers. Check out this article for tips on bonding.

Guinea pigs need much more room than the typical pet store guinea pig cages offer. Here are some websites that have great examples of the type of cages pigs can live happily in, so that they have lots of room to move around and explore:
