Cashew

Cashew was found as a stray and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. HAS asked us for emergency help because of Cashew’s obvious leg injury, and we agreed on the spot. Cashew was sent from HAS to Spencer Creek Animal Hospital where small animal specialist Dr. Stubbs was able to do an exam and x-rays. Turns out, the wonky leg is not broken, but it is dislocated, and may have been so for some time. There’s no way to know exactly how Cashew came to be injured in this way, but we’re happy we were able to get him the help he needed.
A few days after his rescue, Cashew had surgery to try to put the leg back in place, but once Dr. Stubbs got the leg opened up and got a closer look, she could tell there was no way to save the leg. Dr. Stubbs had warned us that amputation may be the eventual outcome, and because the bones in the leg were deformed and beyond repair, the leg had to be removed.
Thankfully, the surgery went well, and Cashew was also neutered while he was under.
Cashew recovered perfectly in his foster home and he figured out how to move around on three legs almost immediately. Thankfully, he didn’t have to go too far to find his forever home, because his foster mom decided to adopt him! Yay!

Is a rabbit the right pet for you? Click here to find out.
Our fostered rabbits are housed in x-pens or similar enclosures so they have lots of room to move around when they aren’t out for floor time. Some of our rabbits are free range in their foster home.
Commercially made pet store rabbit cages are far too small to allow rabbits to stretch out and move around with ease.
Here are some great websites and photos outlining alternative rabbit housing using x pens and similar enclosures.
