Bluebell
We are extremely sad to report that Bluebell passed away suddenly in her foster home. She had been her normal self the night before and when her foster family woke in the morning, she had passed suddenly at some point in the night. There were no outward signs as to what happened, but we have sent her wee body to the vet to see if we can get an answer.
Our hearts go out to Bluebell’s foster family, and to little Benson, who had a very close bond with her.
Sleep well, Bluebell. We’ll never forget your sweet face.
Bluebell was surrendered to a shelter in Quebec by her owners because of allergies. Poor Bluebell was not happy about being in the shelter, and would growl and lunge at all the employees. The folks at One Last Chance rescue reached out for help, and we were glad to help get Bluebell out of that stressful situation. Thank you to the wonderful Freedom Drivers Animal Rescue Transport volunteers for getting Bluebell to us safely. We had Bluebell spayed shortly after her arrival, and she recovered perfectly.
About a month after Bluebell arrived, we rescued Benson. He was abandoned in a box on a residential street in Hamilton. Thankfully, a local resident found the box with Benson inside and called Hamilton Animal Services. Benson’s “stray time” came and went, but nobody came forward to claim him, so we were happy to spring Benson out of the shelter.
On his rescue day, Benson went to see Dr. Stubbs at Spencer Creek Animal Hospital, and he was given a clean bill of health. We’re glad he didn’t have any detrimental health issues caused by his abandonment. He was too small to be fixed when he arrived, so he has an appointment to be neutered in March. Benson is really, really cute, and quite friendly. How someone could abandon him in such a way will always be a mystery to us.
Because a single bunny is a lonely bunny, we decided to try to bond Benson and Bluebell. We’ll let their foster home take the story from here…
“When Bluebell first arrived at my home, I could not believe how tiny she was. Being a dwarf bunny, she can fit in just one hand. Although tiny in size she was full of personality! Bluebell had quite the little bunny attitude. Little miss sass would growl and lunge at my feet whenever I walked by. It was quite comical and cute to witness. Bluebell also has a sweet side. She will let me sit with her and pet her but only when she decides. After a couple weeks of having her in my care Ladybird decided we should try to bond Bluebell.
Benson arrived at my home a few weeks later. Being a baby bunny, he was also very tiny and adorable. Benson was an absolute sweetheart from the moment he arrived. He loves being picked up and held and enjoys being pet from head to toe. He is a true cuddle bug! After only ONE WEEK of slow introductions Benson and Bluebell were hitched! They have become the best of friends rather quickly. It has been quite wonderful to watch their bond grow. Benson & Bluebell are inseparable now! Wherever Bluebell goes her trusty sidekick Benson is just one hop away. Benson’s gentle nature has softened Bluebell’s personality. She has become quite the sweet and loving bunny. It seems like Bluebell was just a little lonely and needed a bunny companion.
Bluebell loves food pellets, treats, and hay. Despite trying a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables bluebell does not seem to fancy any of them. Benson on the other hand does not seem to mind as he will gobble up any fresh food you put in front of him. Benson especially loves parsley, carrots, and dandelion leaves. Benson and Bluebell enjoy spending a lot of time in their tunnel toy and hopping up on the couch to look out the window together. I’m so happy these two sweet wonderful buns will be forever valentines!”

Our fostered rabbits are housed in x-pens or similar enclosures so they have lots of room to move around when they aren’t out for floor time. Some of our rabbits are free range in their foster home.
Commercially made pet store rabbit cages are far too small to allow rabbits to stretch out and move around with ease.
Here are some great websites and photos outlining alternative rabbit housing using x pens and similar enclosures.
