Sherbert

Sherbert was surrendered to a shelter in Quebec by his owners. We weren’t told the reason why he was surrendered, but we are assuming it was because of the serious eye wound he was suffering from, though his owners didn’t mention it when they surrendered him.
The wonderful folks at One Last Chance Rescue reached out to us to help Sherbert, and we couldn’t say no. Big thank you to the equally wonderful Freedom Driver volunteers for getting Sherbert to us safely.
We sent Sherbert to see Dr. Stubbs at Spencer Creek Animal Hospital, and she sedated him to get a better look at what was going on. Turns out, what looked like an injury to Sherbert’s eye was a serious skin infection that had been left untreated for so long, it grew over his eye and the area around it. The same infection was also on his legs, back and bum. Dr. Stubbs cleaned up all the infected areas, and discovered that Sherbert still has an intact eyeball under all that mess, though it is cloudy and likely not functioning. When Sherbert woke up from his sedation and had his pain medication, he booted around his cage and said hello to everyone who came to see him. Such a little trooper!
After a few weeks of medication and love from his foster mom, Sherbert’s skin healed up perfectly! His eye is non-functioning, but it doesn’t need to be removed. Sherbert is so much happier now. He hardly ever balls up, and he has twice the energy he did when we first rescued him. He’s like a brand new hedgehog!
We’re thrilled to report that Sherbert’s foster family couldn’t bear to let him go, so he’s staying with them forever! Congrats on being adopted, Sherbert!
April 2, 2021 – Sherbert was our FOREVER HOME FRIDAY FEATURE
Every Friday, we feature a Ladybird adoption alumni animal in their forever home on our social media.
Sherbert’s mom had this to say:
“Ever since I met Sherbert and heard his story, I knew I couldn’t let him go. When I first welcomed him into my home, he was dealing with a horrible skin and eye infection. He’s healed up wonderfully since then and although his eye is still non-visual, it doesn’t slow him down! His favourite activities include bath time, snuggling in his cuddle sacs, and most importantly treats!”
