Potato
* Potato found his forever home with a wonderful family, and other pigs to be friends with! Yay! *
Potato came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. This poor pig had been badly injured at one point before he arrived at the shelter. He had many wounds that had recently scabbed over, a couple of them quite deep. Thankfully, Potato seemed to be healing from his trauma, but we’ll never know for sure what happened to him.
We got Potato out of the shelter and into the vet for a check-up and neutering. His wounds are healing nicely, and he did great for the surgery.
Poor Potato is an extremely frightened little guy. It seems he may have been psychologically affected by whatever trauma he went through in his past. He’s basically afraid of life. Thankfully, his foster home is quiet, and his foster family are willing to be patient and slow with Potato during all their interactions. Potato spends most of his time in his hidey house, but he does explore his cage while his foster people are at work, as they find piggy poops all around his enclosure when they get home. Potato is slowly getting used to being handled, but it’s definitely not his favourite thing.
Potato does have a favourite thing though, and that’s veggies! He loves romaine lettuce, dandelion leaf, carrot, apple and cucumber. He does not like kale at all. So far that’s the only food he has turned his nose up at. He also loves to burrow into his pile of timothy hay, which is also a great hiding spot. 🙂
Potato is now healed from his neuter surgery and he’s ready to find his forever home! We’re sure that having the company of another guinea pig would help with his mental wellbeing, so preference will be given to a forever home where there are other pigs for him to make friends with. Potato would not be a good fit for a home with children.

Guinea Pigs need space…
Guinea pigs need much more room than the typical pet store guinea pig cages offer. Here are some websites that have great examples of the type of cages pigs can live happily in, so that they have lots of room to move around and explore:
