Schroeder
* Sailor, Salinger and Schroeder found their forever home together with a wonderful person! Woo hoo! *
We rescued Slim, Sailor, Salinger, Schroeder, and Scruffy from a shelter in Ottawa.
A little back story…
We received this message from Kingston Humane Society: “44 rats were dumped in a recycling bin on a local trail in a small creek. Seven of them drowned, but we managed to catch and save the 37 remaining. Looking for help to place them.” How could we say no?
Slim was one of the six rats we were able to take in from this group. We had Slim neutered and he was adopted to a home where the adopters had other rats. A year later, Slim and his new cage mates were unfortunately surrendered to a shelter in Ottawa. Our adoption policy states that we will always take our animals back if the adopter is no longer able to care for them. In this case, we didn’t want to take Slim away from his new friends, so we took Slim and his five cage mates in. They had a vet visit and were all given a clean bill of health. Shortly after arriving into our care, it was quite noticeable that not everybody was getting along amicably. Slim and Scruffy were placed into a different cage together, and that definitely helped simmer the frequent squabbles.
Sailor, Salinger and Schroeder are now ready to find their forever home! We’re asking they be adopted as a trio.
These three boys are a bit shy, and they would benefit from an experienced adopter. Someone who has the time to help them get used to being handled. One thing these rats aren’t shy about is snacks! They love all kinds of fruit, veggies, crackers, cereal, and any other food they are offered. Their foster family provide them lots of fun things to do in their cage (a double Critter Nation cage) and their favourite thing to do is make nests out of strips of newspaper and scrap fabric. They enjoy exploring outside their cage, and hammock naps once they are tuckered out from their day.
Sailor, Salinger and Schroeder will be lovely companions for the right person.
Ladybird recommends Critter Nation cages. They are hands down the most spacious, and best quality enclosure for small animals on the market. They come in single and double sizes, and can be modified and customized to create enrichment and provide comfort. Their design and solid manufacturing almost entirely eliminates the possibility of accidental escape. Critter Nation cages are available (or can be ordered) at most local pet supply stores.
Can’t adopt but want to help?
Monetary donations are always needed, but if you’d like to donate something specifically for the rats in our care, donations of rat food, small pet blankets (used for cage lining), rat hammocks and fleece liners for Critter Nation cages are very much appreciated!
