Beverly
* Beverly and Shirley found their forever home together with lovely people! Yay! *
We rescued Beverly, Shirley, Addie and Kendra from Hamilton Animal Services. They, along with several male rats, had been dumped behind a building on the rail trail in Hamilton. Thankfully someone spotted them and brought them to safety at HAS. The boys were separated from the girls when they arrived.
These poor rats were extremely thin, they had respiratory infections, mites, and they were covered in bite marks and scabs. Some of the rats were beyond the point of medical help, and they sadly didn’t make it.
While still at the shelter, Beverly gave birth to still born babies during the night, and she seemed to be in distress when staff arrived for their morning shift. HAS staff reached out to us and we were able to get all four rats into the vet. An x-ray showed that Beverly still had at least one fetus inside, though it wasn’t clear if it was deceased or not. The timing of when the girls were separated from the boys, and the average domestic rat gestation period led us to believe the unborn baby had not made it. Beverly had surgery to remove the fetus and she was spayed while she was under anesthetic. She did great for the surgery and recovered well in her foster home.
When they arrived into our care, Shirley was the worst of the bunch for having open wounds and scabs, but she has healed up now. Addie and Kendra are a bit younger than Beverly and Shirley. They are all very active and happy, and we’re hoping they’ve forgotten about their past trauma of being abandoned. All four girls are very friendly once they get to know you. We know they’ll make lovely companions for the right home.
We’re asking the rats be adopted as a group, or in pairs.
Ladybird recommends Critter Nation cages. They are hands down the most spacious, and best quality enclosure for small animals on the market. They come in single and double sizes, and can be modified and customized to create enrichment and provide comfort. Their design and solid manufacturing almost entirely eliminates the possibility of accidental escape. Critter Nation cages are available (or can be ordered) at most local pet supply stores.
Can’t adopt but want to help?
Monetary donations are always needed, but if you’d like to donate something specifically for the rats in our care, donations of rat food, small pet blankets (used for cage lining), rat hammocks and fleece liners for Critter Nation cages are very much appreciated!
