Auggie
UPDATE: January 30th, 2023
A few weeks ago we posted about the devastating loss of Auggie – a very sweet black kitty that was rescued back in November. We always kind of knew that if Auggie had pulled through he would have inevitably been a foster-fail, as his foster family were clearly falling in love with him.
Yesterday, when his foster family went to pick up his ashes from the vet, they reached out to us asking if they could officially adopt him. We can’t recall, in our history as a rescue, ever seeing a post-mortem request to adopt a foster animal. This beautiful gesture moved us to tears. And yes, of course they could adopt Auggie officially.
Animals are often our closest companions in life. Our dearest family members. Our most precious and grateful wards. Sending love out to all those who have had the pleasure and privilege of caring for an animal, and sharing your life with them until the end. As it should be.
Much love to Liz and Matthew… Auggie’s humans.
UPDATE: January 13th, 2023
Today is a very sad day for Ladybird. Yesterday we had to say goodbye to our sweet pal Auggie. He had been in the loving care of one of our foster homes since November and was struggling with suppressed appetite, dehydration, and GI issues. He also had an open sore on his belly that refused to heal despite all our foster and vet’s best efforts in treating him. Over the holidays Auggie began to spiral further. This past week he was admitted to the vet for 24/7 care where he was placed on IV fluids. X-rays and ultrasounds revealed nothing obvious, but his blood tests showed that he was not responding positively to any of the care that was being provided. He seemed to be giving up and his quality of life was truly suffering. Through the guidance of our vet, the devastating decision was made to let Auggie go. We’re grateful to his foster family for going the extra mile to show Auggie the love he so deserved during his time with them, and for being there with him while he crossed the rainbow bridge. We love you Auggie. You will never be forgotten.
Auggie – affectionately named after beloved Roald Dahl character “Augustus Gloop” – was rescued from Hamilton Animal Services where he ended up as a stray. No one came to claim this sweet, chonky guy, and he had a dead-end microchip, but had clearly been well-fed for a long time. In shelter Auggie seemed lethargic and disinterested in any physical activity. He didn’t even care to walk across the floor to greet his food dish. His generous tum-tum dragged a bit on the ground, and he had a gross, puss-filled sore there that the shelter was medicating him for. We were happy to get Auggie out of shelter when a loving foster home opened up.
Auggie has been seen by the vet and is now settling in to his foster home. He’s on a special diet and his foster family is determined to help him pump up the jam to shed a bit of weight. He’s the most loveable character, and we’re all really rooting for him.
We will keep you posted on Auggie’s story as we’re confident he will make a beloved addition to his someday forever family.
From Auggie’s Foster Family:
“Auggie is a total ham. He’s a very calm boy who just loves to be around his humans. He will follow you all around the house, purring the whole time, and unlike most cats, he actually enjoys a good belly rub!
He’s very friendly with dogs and it seems likely that he’d be fine with cats too. He enjoys playing, but prefers to bat at the dancer toy while lying around rather than chasing it about.
Despite his large size, Auggie isn’t a voracious eater – he prefers to free-feed. He is a bit messy with his food (and his litter) so putting mats down is recommended!”
