Adeline
* Adeline has been adopted by her foster family! Yay! *
Meredith and Adeline were found as “strays” and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. No owner came forward to claim them. The likely scenario is that they were abandoned by their owner because they were no longer wanted. Currently, pet abandonment is at an all time high – especially small animals like guinea pigs and rabbits. We really wish people would stop doing this. Domestic guinea pigs do not have survival skills to live outside on their own, particularly in an Ontario winter. Abandoning animals outdoors can be sentencing them to a prolonged, painful death by starvation, falling victim to predators, freezing to death… the list goes on. Please, don’t get a pet if you can’t commit for the life of the pet.
Meredith and Adeline were adopted, but just over a year later, Meredith passed away unexpectedly, and their adopters felt it best to return Adeline to us. Adeline was very thin when she was returned, and was missing fur in spots, so she has seen the vet to be sure she wasn’t suffering from ovarian cysts or another internal health issue, but nothing was found on xrays and ultrasound. Our vet suspects her condition was unfortunately caused by malnutrition.
Thankfully, Adeline’s foster mom is very well versed in guinea pig care, and with proper food, hay, and cage cleaning, Adeline is doing much better since she was first returned to us. She has some more weight to gain, but we are very happy with her progress.
Welcome back, Adeline!

Guinea pigs need much more room than the typical pet store guinea pig cages offer. Here are some websites that have great examples of the type of cages pigs can live happily in, so that they have lots of room to move around and explore:
