Polly
* Polly has been adopted by her foster family! Woo hoo! *
Polly was picked up by Hamilton Animal Services as an injured “stray.” She was taken straight to the vet, as it was clear she was in severe pain and couldn’t move her back end. Her eyes were also very red, which was likely caused by being restrained or from extreme stress. Polly was constantly crying at the vet, and would scream out in pain whenever the vet tried to examine her. Her condition was beyond heartbreaking.
The x-rays showed “A complete displaced fracture of the neck of the right ileum” which is the area of the pelvis near the hip joint. We will never know exactly what happened to cause this break, but the vet’s guess was that Polly was dropped or stepped on. It’s also likely that the break could be more than a week old. Polly was put on pain meds, and stayed at the vet for her “stray time.” No owner came forward, and when HAS staff reached out to us for help, we couldn’t say no to this poor puppy.
Polly was transferred to Dr. Stubbs at West Park Animal Hospital, where she had more xrays, and where her pain medication had to be increased due to how uncomfortable she was. Dr. Stubbs let us know that the surgery for this type of break requires a plate as opposed to pins. It’s a more involved surgery that requires a specialized vet, and because Polly is young, it will be a tricky procedure. After many phone calls, we were finally able to secure an appointment for Polly at a specialized clinic in the Toronto area. We are hopeful they’ll be able to help poor Polly, and that she can get the surgery she needs.
Please cross all your fingers for sweet Polly.
UPDATE February 25, 2023
Polly did great for her operation! The vet who performed the surgery said it was a bit tricky, but they were able to repair the fracture with a plate. Polly will hang out at the clinic for another day or two to properly manage her pain, and to be sure she is up and standing. Clinic staff tell us she’s eating well, and she’s much more relaxed than she was when she first arrived.
Thank you for all the well wishes and donations!
Way to go, Polly!
UPDATE February 28, 2023
Polly has been transferred to her foster home, and she’s doing well there so far! She’s starting to come out of her shell a little bit, and she’s enjoying all the attention she’s getting. She’s putting some weight on her leg now, which is a great sign. We’re very hopeful Polly will make a full recovery, but she still has a ways to go.
You got this, Polly!
UPDATE March 6, 2023
Polly is doing great! Here’s a note from her foster mom:
“Polly is very sweet. I was surprised at how trusting she is based on everything she’s been through. Warmed up to us in no time. She plays with toys and I can see her personality coming out more. We let her do some walking this weekend, and I found she was putting some weight on the back leg, which is a good sign. Stitches look awesome, and she takes her meds no problem. She doesn’t even whimper when I pick her up now, so her pain seems to be under control. Everything seems to be progressing as it should be. She’s such a happy little girl.”
Go Polly!
UPDATE March 20, 2023
It’s been just over three weeks since the surgery to repair Polly’s broken pelvis. Look at her go!
UPDATE March 27, 2023
A month after Polly’s surgery, and she’s still doing great!
UPDATE April 12, 2023
Polly continues to heal and she’s able to play like a puppy now! She has follow up x-rays this week to see how things are progressing.
Go Polly!
UPDATE April 23, 2023
Amazing news! Polly has been adopted by her foster family! She got the all clear from the vet that her hip injury is healed, and we were thrilled that Polly’s foster family wanted her to stay forever.
Thank you to everyone who followed Polly’s story and who donated to her care. We couldn’t have helped Polly without your support.
Congrats, Polly!
UPDATE July 19, 2024
Our sweet Birdie (previously “Polly”) was brought into Ladybird as a terrified young pup with a broken pelvis, and in a lot of pain and distress. Thanks to Ladybird she was lucky enough to have surgery and start her long recovery in our home as a foster pup. Watching Birdie heal and grow was so rewarding, and we fell completely head over heels in love with her as she started to feel better and gain her energy. She has turned into the happiest, sweet, sassy little girl. You would never know her start to life was as rocky as it was. With some training and lots of socialization, and introduction to people and other pups she felt safe around, she has grown into such a little sweetie. We’re so proud of her successful recovery and so grateful Ladybird welcomed us to be a part of her journey.
