Mrs. Lop
* Mrs. Lop found her forever home with awesome people! Yippee! *
Mrs. Lop was found as a stray and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. When she arrived, she was very thin, was missing a lot of fur on her underside, and had other issues with her skin. We got Mrs. Lop to the vet and she stayed there for a few days to start her recovery. She was given a flea/tick/mite treatment, which seems to have taken care of some of the skin issues. Though we’ll never know for sure, it’s possible Mrs. Lop’s advanced fur loss was caused by a false pregnancy, also known as pseudopregnancy. It occurs when a rabbit becomes convinced that she is pregnant, even when it is not possible. During a false pregnancy, a rabbit will go through the steps of “nest building” by plucking out her own fur for nesting material.
Thankfully, Mrs. Lop’s fur slowly grew back in, and she gained some much needed weight. When she was feeling well enough, we had Mrs. Lop spayed. No more false pregnancies for this bunny! She did great for the surgery, and now she’s ready to find her forever home!
Here’s a note from Mrs. Lop’s foster family:
“Mrs. Lop has done really well since coming to us. She has perfected her litter box skills, and she is very happy to be living cage-free in a spare room in our home. She takes full advantage of all the space she has, and she can be found hopping onto and into the cardboard boxes she has been provided. She loves her daily greens – her favourite being romaine lettuce. Mrs. Lop is very friendly and curious, but she can have a bit of a “lop-attude” when she feels her space is being invaded (she’ll lunge and try to nip.) For that reason, we feel a home with no small children would be best for her. This behaviour has lessened significantly since her spay surgery. She does accept head pets, and will tell you when she’s had enough by hopping away. She would benefit from an adopter who will be willing to be patient with her to allow her sweet side to shine through. Mrs. Lop is a very cute bunny, and she will make a lovely companion for the right person.”
Rabbits need lots of space…
Our fostered rabbits are housed in x-pens or similar enclosures so they have lots of room to move around when they aren’t out for floor time. Some of our rabbits are free range in their foster home.
Commercially made pet store rabbit cages are far too small to allow rabbits to stretch out and move around with ease. Here are some examples of great enclosures, and rooms set up for free roaming bunnies.
