Gracie
* Gracie found her forever home with lovely people! Yay! *
Gracie came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray and was not claimed. Shelter staff found out that her previous owner had given her away, so it was the new owners who hadn’t claimed her. Gracie’s previous owner gave the shelter Gracie’s name, her approximate age (12), and explained that Gracie’s eye had been removed because of injuries caused by another dog. We don’t know any of the circumstances beyond that.
When Gracie arrived at the shelter, she was matted, she was covered in lumps and bumps, her teeth were bad, and she had a skin infection. On top of all that, she had a terrible urinary infection, so she was started on medication. Gracie quickly became a staff favourite because of her sweet nature and happy smile.
We were thrilled to get Gracie out of the shelter when a foster home opened up. She had a vet appointment on her rescue day, and blood was drawn for testing. The vet did a quick ultrasound to check whether or not Gracie is spayed, and she was not. Unfortunately, the ultrasound revealed a significant mass on Gracie’s spleen. Gracie’s blood results came back all clear, so surgery was scheduled to remove the spleen and spay her. After her vet visit, Gracie was professionally groomed, and though her day at the spa pooped her out, she looked and smelled amazing afterward.
Everything went great with Gracie’s spleen/spay surgery a few weeks later. It’s a good thing she had her spleen removed when she did, because the mass on it had grown during the time between the initial ultrasound and the surgery date. And another separate mass had developed on the spleen as well. Scary stuff!
Gracie recovered very well for an older girl, and now she’s ready to find her forever home!
Here’s a note from Gracie’s foster family:
“Gracie is a wonderful dog and a joy. She is true to the characteristics of her breed. Gracie is loyal, very loving, polite, mild mannered and very smart. She loves any and all attention and gives it in return. She gets very excitable at meal times and enjoys going for walks. She is very quick to catch onto routine. Playing is not one of her favourite things – she would rather stay by you. She is not bothered by other pets in the same household and does not create any conflict (dogs or cats). She would be a welcome addition for any person or family.”
