Harbour
February 2/24
Harbour was found in a field in Ancaster and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. She was extremely thin, infested with fleas, and wasn’t putting weight on her back leg. Shelter staff treated Harbour for the fleas, and sent her to the vet for xrays. No fractures or any other reason for her lameness was seen on the xrays, so Harbour was sent back to the shelter to wait out her stray time. Poor Harbour didn’t want to eat, and her gums were very pale. Over the week she was at the shelter, her health went downhill. Being a municipal shelter, HAS is limited to the amount of money they can spend on each animal. Since they had already done the xrays, they weren’t able to send her back to the vet for treatment, so she was added to the euthanasia list. Shelter staff reached out to us for help, and we agreed to take Harbour in. As luck would have it, Jenna from a local rescue called Save Our Scruff happened to be at the shelter while we were messaging with HAS about Harbour, and Jenna was kind enough to transport Harbour to the vet for us! Thanks Jenna!
Harbour is now at the vet and she’s quite anemic. She’ll have blood testing and more comprehensive xrays to try to sort out what’s going on. She’s a very sweet girl, despite how she must be feeling. She’s got a long road ahead of her, but we know Harbour will be a lovely companion for someone when she’s feeling better.
Welcome to Ladybird, Harbour! We’re so happy you’re here!
March 19/24 UPDATE
Harbour is doing great! Her lengthy illness had been caused by hemolytic anemia (a form of mycoplasma).
Thankfully the vet care and medication she was provided finally cleared it up, and she was healthy enough to be spayed today. Yay! We’re so happy this sweet girl is one step closer to being able to start the search for her forever home. If her good health continues, she’ll be made available for adoption in a couple of weeks.
Way to go, Harbour!
April 8/24 UPDATE
Harbour is finally ready to find her forever home!
Here’s a note from her foster mom:
“Harbour is the sweetest little cat who would love nothing more than to curl up and lay in your lap. She loves the dogs in her foster home but has mixed feelings about her foster cat siblings – most times she will head bump them for licks but also prefers her own space. She will let you know when it’s dinner time and in typical cat fashion, will let you know when she’s had enough pets, but then will gently grab your hand with her paws and lick you. She was severely anemic when she was rescued so is still gaining some needed weight and requires a gastrointestinal or sensitive stomach diet to help with this.”
Please adopt Harbour!
May 22/24
Over the past few weeks, Harbour has been back and forth to the vet with flair ups of hemolytic anemia. The symptoms were lethargy and refusal to eat. Thankfully, she would bounce back after treatment at the vet, but yesterday things were different. Harbour was extremely sick yesterday morning, and her foster mom brought her to the vet first thing. Every attempt to help Harbour was implemented, but her health continued to decline during the day. When all treatment options were exhausted and it was realized that Harbour’s condition had gone beyond help, the heartbreaking decision was made to relieve her suffering. We’re so sad this sweet girl didn’t get a chance to know a forever home, but we take comfort that she was surrounded by love during her time with us.
Our hearts go out to Harbour’s foster family, and to the team at the vet clinic who did everything they could for her. We’re also sending love to the dog friends in Harbour’s foster home, who will also be missing her company.
Rest in peace, Harbour. We’ll never forget your sweet face.
