Someone abandoned six budgies outside the doors of a pet store in Hamilton. When pet store employees discovered the box of birds, they brought them to Hamilton Animal Services. Shelter staff reached out to us for help, and we were able to take in two of the birds when a foster home stepped up. The other four birds were put up for adoption through Hamilton Animal Services.
Our budgies’ foster mom named them HeiHei and Pua – characters from the animated movie Moana.
HeiHei has a wonky leg. It sticks out sideways at times, but he is still able to get around and perch somewhat normally.
HeiHei and Pua had a vet visit shortly after their rescue, and the vet determined that HeiHei’s leg is likely an old injury at the knee. The vet didn’t think HeiHei is in any pain, and since he is mobile and can use the leg, there is no reason for surgery or any kind of treatment unless it starts to cause him issue. Other than that, both birds received a clean bill of health, and now they’re ready for their forever home!
Here’s a note from their foster mom:
“Pua and Hei Hei have been the most delightful little house guests. They brighten up the room with their little chirps. While they don’t seem overly keen on handling, Pua will at times step up on your finger and they will both eat Nutriberries from your fingers. So far they haven’t made use of their foraging toys – I don’t think they have quite figured them out just yet!Our household is a busy one with 2 cats, 1 dog, and 2 young children and Pua and Hei Hei do not seem overly stressed by lots of activity. They have tolerated many attempted petting sessions from my 8 year old daughter without any attempts to bite. Hei Hei has an old injury to his right leg. He got his name because he is always waving hello! The Veterinarian does not believe he is in any pain but did say to keep an eye on his leg. If it becomes an issue later on he may need to have it amputated. For now though he does seem to use the leg to grip the bars and swing. He may just need more frequent nail trims as he doesn’t use his right foot to perch so his nails don’t wear down as quickly. Pua and Hei Hei are beautiful little birds and will make absolutely wonderful companions to whoever is lucky enough to adopt them.”
