Apollo
* Athena and Apollo have been adopted together by the most wonderful person! Yippee! *
Apollo was brought to Cambridge Humane Society as a stray and was not claimed. When he arrived, Apollo’s teeth were severely overgrown. The shelter had Apollo neutered and his teeth were trimmed while he was under anesthetic in hopes that the problem would be solved and he could be made available for adoption. Unfortunately over the next month, Apollo’s teeth grew back again and were worse than before. The teeth needed to be removed, but that was beyond the shelter’s capacity, so they reached out to us for help. They sent us the photo of him in the bowtie, and how could we resist? 🙂
We were happy to take Apollo in, and the day after his rescue, Apollo had surgery to remove his top and bottom front teeth, and the surgery went off without a hitch. For a short while after surgery, he needed his pellets mushed up, his greens cut into tiny pieces, and his timothy hay cut short to make it easier for him to get it to his back teeth where all the chewing happens. This little guy was nothing short of amazing after the surgery. He was eating and playing and binkying in his foster home like nothing ever happened. He was definitely happy not to have all that pain in his mouth from the wonky teeth.
About a week before we rescued Apollo, we had taken in a bunny named Athena. She was spayed on her rescue day and healed up perfectly.
In their foster home, Athena and Apollo were in pens right next to each other with a solid barrier between. The barrier was gradually removed, so they could see/smell each other, and interact between the bars. After a few bonding sessions they’re now happily living together in one big pen, and they’re ready for their forever home together!
Athena and Apollo can both be “spicy” buns. They are friendly with humans, but will also lunge and try to bite if they feel threatened. Not a worry with Apollo as he has no front teeth to cause harm, but Athena can get a nip in. For that reason, they wouldn’t be the best fit for a home with young children. Like most rabbits, they’re not fans of being picked up. Sitting in their pen and letting them come to you for attention is the best way to make friends with these buns.
They love to hop around and chase each other in play. They’re litter trained, though you’ll find a few poops just outside the litter box on occasion. Apollo needs to have his fruit/veggies/treats chopped up into small pieces, but he’s otherwise able to eat pellets and hay without issue. Both buns love Oxbow brand treats and their favourite veggies are romaine lettuce and dandelion.
Athena and Apollo would love a forever home where they have a large living space, lots of time out of their enclosure, and a human who will shower them with attention and treats.
* February 15/25 UPDATE *
Athena and Apollo have been adopted by a wonderful person!
They’ve already made themselves right at home, and they’re zooming and binkying the day away.
Congrats, Athena and Apollo!
* Athena and Apollo have been vaccinated against Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHDV).
