Evangeline
Evangeline was surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services by her owners because she was in a constant state of fear and wasn’t a good fit for their home. This poor pig is absolutely terrified of the world. Being prey animals, guinea pigs are generally skittish in nature, but this little girl is far beyond that. She’s panic stricken. While she waited for rescue, shelter staff were kind enough to move her cage to a quiet part of the shelter to try to ease her fear at least a little.
Guinea pigs are herd animals, and should always be housed in pairs or groups. It helps with their confidence and overall wellbeing. Not sure how Evangeline came to be a single pig, but there are pet stores and back yard breeders who will sell a single pig to anyone who has the money. It’s extremely frustrating that some people don’t do right by the animals they sell – though we really can’t expect much from those who make money breeding/selling living beings while thousands of them already here are being abandoned, surrendered and euthanized every day. But we digress…
Evangeline had a vet visit on her rescue day and she was given a clean bill of health.
Evangeline is so scared and skittish that she is difficult to photograph. Her foster family had to set up the camera and leave the room to get video of her because she wouldn’t come out of hiding otherwise. It breaks our hearts to think at only four months old, she had already been through something that caused her to be so petrified.
In the weeks since coming to her foster home, she has started to come around. She will now zoom around her enclosure when she knows treats or veggies are coming. She still doesn’t want to be handled, and will go into panic mode, but she’s better about it than when she first arrived. Even with this slight improvement, we would still not recommend she go to a home with children.
In Evangeline’s foster home, there are other guinea pigs in the same room, and she will have very chatty conversations with them. We are asking she go to a forever home with other female pigs or a neutered male. We hope that when she’s adopted, new pig friends will be a great comfort to her.
Please adopt Evangeline!

Guinea pigs need much more room than the typical pet store guinea pig cages offer. Here are some examples of appropriate cages pigs can live happily in, so that they have lots of room to move around and explore:
