Back in November, Tilly came into Hamilton Animal Services as a “stray”, but no owner came forward to claim her. Being that she has a head tilt, the chances that Tilly broke out of her home and ran away are very slim. It’s more likely Tilly is one of the hundreds of rabbits being dumped outdoors by their owners when they grow tired of the amount of work it takes to care for a rabbit, and the rabbit has become an inconvenience. Domestic rabbits do not have the survival skills that wild rabbits do, and many domestic rabbits do not survive being abandoned outdoors – especially in winter. We’re glad Tilly made it through her ordeal and was brought to the safety of the shelter.

During her time at the shelter, Tilly became a staff favourite. She was spayed, vaccinated, and she had xrays to try to diagnose the tilt, which is likely a severe ear infection.

Tilly had a vet visit on her rescue day, and a round of medication has been started that will hopefully clear up the infection. She doesn’t seem to be in any discomfort, and rabbits can live happily with a tilt, so we’ll do this round of meds and see what next steps are – if any.
We’re happy we could get Tilly out of the shelter and into a loving foster home where she can get lots of love and attention. Tilly will be made available for adoption when we get her health sorted as best we can.
