Lucy
Rescued from Hamilton Animal Control and happily adopted, here’s what Lucy’s foster mom, and co-founder of the LAS, Melissa McClelland had to say about her:
I Love Lucy
When I first met Lucy she peered out from the back of her kennel with four squirming little kittens piled up around her. Lucy is tiny to begin with, but was skin and bones at our meeting. She was clearly sick. Eyes red, sneezing, fur coming out in clumps and a painful looking infection on her backside. I wondered if it was worth saving this poor girl who was clearly suffering. The endless nursing of her 4 kittens kept her horizontal in the back of the kennel. I would occasionally reach in when I had to handle one of the kittens. Lucy would just follow me with her eyes, but never kept me from doing my work. In return, I discovered right away that a gentle scratch on her head would suffice. She’d keep her eyes on me and quietly purr.
The next two weeks that followed were all about aiding Lucy in her gradual recovery. I watched as the little kittens began to open their eyes and wiggle their way around, still attached to poor mom most of the time. I had Lucy on medication and would brush her fur every day. Her breathing was labored and at one point she refused to eat for a full day. I rushed her to the vet where they taught me how to force feed her. I held Lucy in my arms every few hours and with a syringe forced in the corner of her mouth, I would feed her a mixture of cat food and water. And then more medicine. I was so impressed with how trusting Lucy was through all this. Not once did she swipe at me or try and nip me. She just let me do my thing and thankfully because of her trusting nature she was back in good health in just a few weeks.
The summer is flying by and Lucy has fully weaned her babies. Little Steven and Carrot have taken over the house and are getting into all kinds of trouble. They move into their new home in just about a week. I’m so happy that these two boys get to stay together! Hubert went to his forever home about three weeks ago and has settled in quite nicely with his new family. Whiskers unexpectedly passed away when she was only a few weeks old. She was a mini Lucy with her colouring and gentle purring. She will be missed and it was a sad day when we had to say goodbye. Lucy struts around the house now, a brand new girl. She is a tiny cat and only about two years old, but she has filled out nicely and her coat is soft and shiny. She has a sweet demeanour and a pretty little face and has made a speedy recovery after being fixed a few weeks ago. She still longs for a little scratch on her head and it always sets her off purring. She also has the greatest meow and at certain moments has something quite definite that she is trying to say.
