Lovey
The Ladybird Animal Sanctuary rescued Lovey from Hamilton Animal Control where she had found herself as a stray. Lovey was quite pregnant when she was rescued, and she gave birth to six beautiful little kittens on February 7th, 2014. Thanks to some help from her foster mom, Lovey raised her kittens wonderfully and they grew up healthy and happy. They have all since been adopted, and now it’s Lovey’s turn!
Here’s a note from Lovey’s foster mom:
“As a lover of animals and advocate for responsible guardianship, I am just so thankful for the ladies of ladybird and all the wonderful and unfortunately necessary work that they do to save animals and give them a second chance.
Lovey is just one such animal who found herself unwanted, unloved, discarded, abandoned, left behind like garbage. Rescued from animal control on January 13th (after haven been there a week) I noticed a note on paperwork that said ‘tenants had left a month before’…I was so sad to read this and knew right away that this wonderful little lass was coming home with me.
Very pregnant we took her right to our amazing vet at Fox Creek Vet Clinic. At first, the doctor was not sure if she was (still) pregnant because of lack of movement. For a few moments I felt sick wondering if her plight of being abandoned and left all alone had meant her kittens had perished. Just the thought of this sweet, skinny, poor little feline being alone, pregnant, scared, and quite possibly with little or no food and water for what might have been 3 weeks made my heart heavy. My 12 year old son and I sat quietly waiting for the vet to come and let us know what was going on. And when the door swung open we were asked to join him and a staff member in the back where he was doing a cat ultrasound. She was purring and lying still as he moved the wand over her belly and tears came to my eyes when I saw movement from one, two, three kittens. She had been giving everything she had nutritionally to them so they could thrive. I sighed with relief as the vet said there were at least 3 kittens but it was hard to see just how many she had baking in there 😮 )
So we took her home. The first thing was to get a lot of calories into her. She ate like a champ, every couple of hours and while she never gained any weight herself, it ensured her kittens were getting exactly what they needed in the final stages of gestation.
You can see from the before picture at animal control, the one where she looks raggedy and missing fur on her legs that she was not in great shape when she was rescued. Being alone and in distress, she took to biting the fur off her legs out of despair. Once she settled in with us (by about day 3) she stopped doing that and instead would jump up with me on the sofa in her room, put her front two legs on my leg and start kneading and this would go on and on. When she tired, she would then jump up in my lap and sit and continue to knead my lap, long nails and all 😮 ) Sometimes she would do this for 30 minutes and while she did I would pet her and listen to her purr and tell her that she was safe and what a good girl and mom she was going to be. And what a good mom indeed. When I checked on her to say good night at 12:30am on February 7th, she looked up at me, gave a meow (which she had not done before) and I knew she was about to deliver. 4 hours and 6 kittens later she allowed me to clean her up and move her and her babies to a nice quiet nest where she took care of them and their every need. She was such a great mom that even when the kittens were old enough not to need her milk, she would still call them out once a day just to continue to bond with them. She is such a sweetie pie.
And now it is Lovey’s time to shine and become the amazing companion animal that her previous humans never let her be. All 6 kittens have been adopted and now she is settling into a life as a cat, not just a mom and she is doing really well.
She is young and is learning that it is ok to play and romp and chase and act like a kid for probably the first time. With that in mind, she would do well in a home with another young animal to play with as the resident cats are older and well fat and lazy. She has always been good around the resident cats in the home and shows no aggression or behavioural issues about finding a place in a multi cat home. She might not be too interested in very young kids and being manhandled but she still enjoys a nice lap to knead and settle into. She likes playing with a feather boa wand and leaps high into the air to catch it. She is a good eater and has no issue with the litter box however she does like a box with lots of litter so she can dig a big hole when she uses it 😮 ) She is not a vocal cat but does like to follow you around and let you know she would like a snack by stretching up high and trying to reach the top of the counter with her paws when you are in the kitchen or follow you to the washroom and try to get some petting and head butts.
All 8.2lbs of her is lovely and sweet and adorable and ready to find her own forever pal(s).”
Lovey found her forever home with a wonderful family!
