Mister Wendal
We rescued Mister Wendal from Hamilton Animal Control where he found himself as a stray.
Here’s a note from Mister Wendal’s foster mom:
“OMCG! Oh my cuddly goodness! When I heard Mr. Wendal was at Animal Control with a ‘caution’ note on his cage I couldn’t believe it. While he is a tabby that never gets that ‘happy cat’ look on his face (you know that blissed out, too much food/milk look) don’t let that fool you, he is happy all the time. He has a permanent circle embedded in the fur around his neck from someone leaving a collar on him as he grew, but that doesn’t seem to have caused him any behavioural issues so I can’t tell why anyone would label him ‘caution’.
When I picked this gentleman up from our wonderful friends at FoxCreek Vet Clinic he immediately began rubbing his head all over my face and he hasn’t stopped since. He goes up to my son, rubs his face on his face, my son’s friends, his face on their faces, my friends, his face on their faces, anybody that comes to my place, his face on their faces….I think you get the idea. This is the least ‘caution’ cat I have ever encountered in my life. He is so sweet, so amiable, so chill, so calm, and so mellow, I have to check sometimes to make sure he is still breathing. If it wasn’t for the fact that he is normally either laying partially on me (my lap) or the back of the couch (paws on my shoulder) or when I am in my cozy chair or bed, he is either curled up on my lap or laying on my chest, I’d wonder. Mr. Wendal is one pleased and pleasant cool kat, Sammy Davis of cool kats.
Mr. Wendal, is super friendly, super lovey, super laid back and super needy. Yep, I said it, NEEDY. So with that in mind, you need to know that loving Mr. Wendal and being loved by Mr. Wendal is NOT for the faint of heart, nor anyone who isn’t steady on his/her feet, plus definitely not someone who prefers the company of a more persnickety feline (one that is off on its’ own, only seeking human contact for food and the occasional petting).
I will get to the needy part but first let’s talk about his meow, which is not that of a normal cat. It sounds rather like Gary the snail from Spongebob Square pants. If that reference is lost on you, his sound (technically his meow) is a cross between a crow and sheep, maybe more like a goat. It’s hard to describe in mere human words but I can imitate it in a pinch. It never changes, it might be shorter for food and longer (and louder) when he wants your attention if he thinks you have been neglecting him.Back to neediness. Don’t think that he is an anxious or fearful cat if left alone, that is not the case. He just wants to be with you every moment that he is awake and you are around. If you’re making dinner, he wants to be with you, if you are watching tv, he is right there with you, vacuuming the living room, he is laying on the back of the couch, looking right at you, if you get up in the middle of the night (you best have a nightlight on even if you don’t have kids) cause there’s Mr. Wendal, white chest and paws in the darkness sitting just to the right of you as you are in the bathroom for a late night pee. I’ve come to accept Mr. Wendal, may very well think he is a small canine. You can call him as you go into another room and he will follow you. He is obedient, just like a pooch. He’s no trouble, just be prepared that being loved by Mr. Wendal is ongoing and interactive. He likes head bonking, he really likes head bonking, he wants you to know how much he loves you by getting in as many head bonks as he can. If that isn’t possible, he will lay with/on you and purr for a good under the neck scratch. If you get up, he’s right there with you (that is why you need to be sure footed) as it feels at times like he is stuck to you like glue or better yet tethered. If Mr. Wendal was an advertising slogan he would be the one for VISA ‘ it’s (he’s) everywhere you want to be’ :o)
The only time this isn’t the case is when he is sleeping, which he prefers to do on/near you if possible (but not always). There are times when he will happily lay on a pillow beside you on the couch or near you in bed but if you move and he wakes up, be prepared for a full on Wendal. He’s a good boy who will do best in a home where there are no seniors or people with mobility issues. Kids are fine, he is pretty complacent and takes everything in stride as he has to do ’cause often my son and I don’t know he’s around us (you’d think we’d know better by now but) and he gets a little boot by accident, which doesn’t faze him in the least, nor does he take it personally.
Besides his constant love for you, Mr. Wendal also has a few issues you need to be aware of. He has renal issues and needs special dry food from the vet as well as half a pill a day. This is maintenance for him and likely he will need both his entire life. It’s easy to get both but as for costs you would need to ask the Ladybirds as they currently cover them. Also, Mr. Wendal is a sneezer. Yep, a sneezer. He sneezes, not sure why, he just does. He doesn’t have a cold and my cats have not caught anything from him so I am not sure why the sneezing, and neither does our vet. Maybe he is allergic to people, fibres, the environment, or maybe Mr. Wendal is just allergic to Mr. Wendal. Or maybe the hairs on the inside of his nose tickle him too much? I really don’t know and haven’t figured it out so far other than to tell you, he is a sneezy boy and I often end up having to wipe his face or my face, or my pillow. It’s not his fault and honestly, I just accept this as part and parcel of all that Mr. Wendal is and because he is such a wonderful cat, I don’t mind at all that this is who he is. You might want to investigate this but since It doesn’t seem to cause him any distress, so far I’ve been focusing on his food and pilling him (which of course he just loves :o) NOT. He is a pretty unique feline that will bring lots of love, smiles, companionship, and yes, sneezes to your life, but compared to the grief we deal with in the world, it’s a small price to pay for such an awesome friend. And that is exactly what Mr. Wendal is to my son and me and can be to you (and yours).”
Mister Wendal found his forever home with awesome people!
