Clover
We rescued Clover from a high-volume shelter in the Montreal area. Big thank you to the volunteer transport drivers for getting Clover to Hamilton so she could start her new life!
Clover is a high-energy bunny. She will need a living space that provides her a lot of room. Clover’s foster mom introduced Clover to another rabbit, but Clover was too aggressive with the other bunny, even after proper introductions and several attempts over time. Seems Clover prefers to be the only one getting all the attention!
Here’s a report from Clover’s foster mom:
“Clover came to us from a high-kill shelter as a very aggressive and unsocialized rabbit. In the past 2 months she has made amazing progress, and I can confidently say that she is now affectionate and happy! Clover was initially very aggressive, wouldn’t let me to come near or touch her, and her only communications with me included stomping, snorting, and just generally very very unhappy behaviour. With some help from several sources on working with aggressive rabbits, Clover finally started letting me pet her, but was still skittish, even after being fixed. Her environment shifted when the other rabbit she was sent with was adopted out, giving her all the room and attention she needed to really make progress. I can happily report that she’s now very happy, is binking, chinning, and happy-bunny-flopping; is socializing, friendly, and curious with the other animals; and let’s me pet her whole body for minutes at a time, for as long as I choose. The combination of lots of floor time, lots of attention, and positive reinforcement has let the happy bunny in her shine through! She’s also much more independent with her floor time and we pretty much leave the gate to her rabbitat open as long as we’re able to keep an eye on her. She thrives when she’s allowed freedom and lots of love. She mainly stays in her room so far, but just yesterday hopped out into our main living space and sat on the cat scratching pad for a few minutes observing everything. She loves to hop up to the window and look outside, and is a very curious and sweet girl. We haven’t tried to pick her up yet (outside of to clean her space), but I’m working on it! I have a feeling that she’ll be hopping around the living room in no time. It makes us glad to see how far she’s come!
Clover loves fresh veggies, especially strawberries and kale.”
Our fostered rabbits are housed in x-pens or similar enclosures so they have lots of room to move around when they aren’t out for floor time. Commercially made pet store rabbit cages are far too small to allow rabbits to stretch out and move around with ease.
Here are some great websites outlining alternative rabbit housing using x pens and similar enclosures. These can be retrofitted to accommodate bedding for a bunny who isn’t litter box trained.
