Nutella
Nutella was brought into Hamilton Animal Control as a stray. Nutella was in very rough shape when he arrived at HAC. He was extremely thin, suffering from eye infections, had a large abscess under his chin and several broken teeth. Nutella was taken straight to the vet where the abscess was treated, and two severely broken teeth were removed under sedation. Our vets put him on medications to help with the infection and pain. Several weeks later, he had a surgery to debride some of the abscesses inside his mouth and remove more of the broken teeth. He seemed to be feeling better after the surgery, and after a few more vet visits, his prognoses was looking good. Nutella was doing great in his foster home, and was starting to come out of his shell with his foster family as he was feeling better.
But one evening, Nutella’s foster mom noticed that his jaw was swollen, and by morning, Nutella was refusing to eat even his favourite treats.
At the vet later that day, we received the news that Nutella’s abscess had aggressively returned and that the infection was bone deep. Just like our Milo, aside from removing Nutella’s jaw, (which is not a pleasant way for a rabbit to live) there would be nothing we could do to stop the abscesses and infection from returning again and again. Nutella was suffering, and despite our vets best treatment, he would continue to suffer in the future. That was the last thing we wanted for this sweet bunny.
We had to make the awful decision to end Nutella’s pain, and today, we let him go.
Nutella had the most wonderful foster family looking after him during his time with us. Our hearts are breaking for them, as we all had so much hope for Nutella’s recovery and eventual healing from his issues.
Nutella’s foster mom said this in an email to us earlier this month:
“People keep asking me ‘but what does a rabbit do?’. He shares peace. That’s what he does.”
How lovely that our sweet Nutella inspired such an honest and beautiful sentiment. Thank you to Nutella’s foster family for taking such good care of him right until the end. We know “Kip” was thankful for your love.
Sleep well little Nutella. We will never forget you.
