Freddie
* Freddie found his forever home with amazing people! *
Freddie ended up at Toronto Animal Services as a stray. During his time at TAS, he became territorial in his cage and started to get bitey when staff cleaned his cage or when members of the public stuck their fingers through the bars. He was lovely when he was outside the cage, but unfortunately TAS were only able to house him in a cage at their shelter, and he was becoming more and more aggressive the longer he stayed. TAS reached out to Ladybird in hopes that we could help, and we happened to have a bunny foster home available!
Freddie settled in at his foster home (where he was provided a very spacious x-pen enclosure!) and now he’s ready to find his forever home!
Here’s a note from Freddie’s foster home:
“SMART, PLAYFUL, ACTIVE and BUSY! Freddie has an enthusiasm for each new day that is contagious. Freddie absolutely loves every dark leafy green, herb or bunny-approved veggies and fruit that come his way. He loves to play with toys, dig for hay and sticks in his dig-box, and re-arrange his space (sometimes in quite comical ways!) Freddie can be an escape-artist if the opportunity presents itself! (Clamps on his X-pen have thwarted further attempts). Freddie is a hoot to watch and he always makes us smile.
It didn’t take long for Freddie to attach to his primary caregiver and he is now a full fledged cuddle-bug. He’s a vocal bunny who likes to honk. He LOVES attention and to be rubbed and groomed – he doesn’t tire of it no matter how long it goes on.
During his first week or so out of the shelter cage and in his X-Pen, Freddie seemed pretty fearful and would dart, lunge and bite fingers. These behaviours have greatly dissipated, though some biting does continue. We’re trying to pinpoint if there are any triggers, but this may simply be a little guy who feels best heard through a nip; most often now, it’s ankles and legs that are targets. These bites seem to happen when we move too quickly through his space, or when Freddie is feeling over-eager to be fed those greens or has not had enough attention or romping-around-the-house time. Freddie would I think do best with a family who can provide him with lots of romping and exploring time around a bunny-proof area (he’s a master chewer!); he is noticeably more relaxed when he gets that time and never bites when he’s out-and-about.
Freddie is beginning to get to know the cats in the home and is adapting to them well; he hasn’t had the opportunity to be around dogs. Freddie is great at using his litter box.
Freddie is an absolutely awesome little cutie with tons of sparkle and personality; he has a ‘mind of his own’ and his forever family will be a person or people who value his individuality and spirit. If this is you – then you may be the family he’s waiting for!”
Please adopt Freddie!
Thinking about adopting a rabbit? Read this article to be sure you’re fully prepared to bring a bunny home.
Commercially made “rabbit cages” sold in pet stores are far too small for rabbits to live comfortably. We recommend an x-pen set up, or other large enclosure that gives a rabbit lots of space to move around and stretch out. Visit these websites for lots of great rabbit set-up ideas!
