* Pontiac and Portia found their forever home together with wonderful people! *

Portia was brought into Hamilton Animal Control as a stray. A couple of days later, a male rat who looked identical to Portia was brought into HAC as a stray from the same area.
Portia turned out to be pregnant, so we’re assuming she and the other rat (Pontiac) were together before they ended up at the shelter separately.
While at the shelter, Portia gave birth to 8 babies. On August 24th, she delivered four girls and four boys and they were super cute! We were happy to be able to rescue Portia and her babies so she could care for them in surrounded by love in a foster home instead of in a noisy shelter! We rescued Pontiac at the same time and placed him into a different foster home.

Pontiac had an open wound on his abdomen area. We’re not sure how it happened, but we took him to the vet where he had surgery to fix it up. While he was under anesthetic, we had him neutered so he could eventually be reunited with Portia.
He came through the surgery like a champ, and once he was healed, and Portia’s babies were weened, we (re)introduced Pontiac to Portia, and it was like they had always been together! They immediately snuggled into each other and explored their surroundings together. Happily reunited! Yay!

It’s pretty obvious that Pontiac and Portia were not handled a lot in their previous home. They are shy about human contact, but they never bite. They can be picked up, but they’re not excited about it. They will need a forever home with rat experience. Someone who will be very patient, and who will be able to spend a lot of time with them to help them get over their fears. They’ll make lovely companions for the right home!
