Poe
* Poe and Pterodactyl were adopted to lovely people! *
Panther, Poe, Pinky and Pterodactyl were born at Hamilton Animal Control to their mother Portia, who came into the shelter as a stray. When the baby rats were 2 weeks old, we were able to rescue the family from the shelter when a foster home opened up for them. Much better for Portia to raise her babies in a loving home than in a noisy shelter!
Poe and Pterodactyl are shy, but their foster family are helping them become more used to being handled. Though they’re shy, they’re also very sweet…and so adorable!
We’re asking that Poe and Pterodactyl be adopted together.
Here’s a note from their foster home:
“These gentle rats are curious of humans but still pretty shy. They tolerate being pet and stroked by us but don’t seek it out, and don’t seem to enjoy being held. They have sweet temperaments though and have never bitten. They are becoming more comfortable with human attention by the day and we are confident that with patience they will learn to enjoy time outside the cage interacting with people. They are very bonded as brothers (must be adopted in pairs) and are fun to watch as they wrestle and snuggle. We even see them drinking from the water bottle at the same time. They love climbing, going through tunnels (paper towel tubes) and going in their igloo. They are oddly (for rats) not food motivated, but they like to nibble the white part of corn kernels. They are very clean and have a habit of pooping out the side of the cage, which we are hoping might lead to being able to train them to go in one certain area.”
Please adopt Poe and Pterodactyl!
Ladybird recommends Critter Nation cages. They are hands down the most spacious, and best quality enclosure for small animals on the market. They come in single and double sizes, and can be modified and customized to create enrichment and provide comfort. Critter Nation cages are available (or can be ordered) at most local pet supply stores.
Can’t adopt but want to help?
Monetary donations are always needed, but if you’d like to donate something specifically for the rats in our care, donations of rat food and small pet blankets (used for cage lining) are very much appreciated!
