Persephone
August 24th, 2017, Pebbles,Panda and Persephone were born at Hamilton Animal Services to their mother Portia, who came into the shelter as a stray. When the baby rats were two weeks old, we were able to rescue the family from the shelter when a foster home opened up for them. Much better for Portia to raise her babies in a loving home than in a noisy shelter!
Pebbles, Panda and Persephone spent months in their foster home before being moved to Spencer Creek Animal Hospital to be fostered there. The hope was, being in the view of the public in the enclosure at the front of the clinic would help them to get adopted. Unfortunately, all three rats started to develop lumps that needed to be removed. Fortunately, they were right there at the clinic to have it done! Big thanks to Dr. Stubbs for performing the surgeries and helping P, P and P feel better!
Because of their advanced age and the recurring tumours, it was decided that it was in the rats’ best interest to be removed from the adoptable animal list, and stay at the clinic where they could get the best care right away when needed.
Sadly, Persephone’s health took a turn for the worse in November 2019, and Dr. Stubbs recommended euthanasia to end her suffering.
Thank you Spencer Creek for taking such great care of Persephone and for giving her a safe and loving place to live out her days.
Rest in peace Persephone. We’ll always remember your cute face.
