Sterling
* Sterling found his forever home with the most amazing people! Yay Sterling! *
Sterling was found loose in the driveway of the Hamilton Animal Control building. He was unable to use his back legs, but was still alert and trying to hop around. It’s disheartening that someone took the time to bring Sterling all the way to the shelter, but then dumped him in the driveway instead of bringing him inside…especially in the condition he was in.
HAC staff sent Sterling to the vet, and xrays showed that he had serious thinning of his bones and muscle wasting, likely due to long-term lack of proper nutrition. He was sent back to the shelter on medication. Over the next few weeks, Sterling made incredible progress. He slowly re-gained the use of his back legs, and was eventually hopping around like a normal rabbit. Amazing what love, medication and proper food can do! We want to thank HAC staff for not giving up on Sterling and for giving him extra love and care during his time at the shelter.
We took Sterling to the vet to have him neutered. While he was under, he had a second set of xrays done that showed excellent improvement. He may suffer from arthritis later in life, but the vet was hopeful that Sterling didn’t have any negative long-term effects caused by his previous condition. He’s not on any medication currently, but the vet did recommend a daily joint supplement treat, which thankfully Sterling loves!
Seeing Sterling now, you’d never know he was in such terrible shape not too long ago. He hops and jumps and binkies just like any normal bunny. He has a healthy appetite and he’s very close to being 100% litter trained. His foster home currently has a puppy pee pad in front of the box for the occasional slip up, but they’re few and far between now. He’s almost perfect!
Sterling is a super friendly rabbit. Social and sweet. He loves nothing more than pats and scritches. Except maybe lettuce and carrots. He likes those a lot too!
Please adopt Sterling!
Our fostered rabbits are housed in x-pens or similar enclosures so they have lots of room to move around when they aren’t out for floor time. Commercially made pet store rabbit cages are far too small to allow rabbits to stretch out and move around with ease.
Here are some great websites outlining alternative rabbit housing using x pens and similar enclosures.
