Mary Jane
* Mary Jane found her forever home with lovely people, and she has a dog brother to be friends with too! *
A week before Christmas, Mary Jane was surrendered to Hamilton Animal Control by her owner because her owner was moving. At twelve and a half years old, after being with one owner since she was a puppy, Mary Jane was understandably confused, stressed and upset about being left in a cage in a noisy shelter instead of at home with her family.
Thankfully, it only took us a couple of days to line up a foster home for Mary Jane and organize her rescue. We picked her up from HAC and took her straight to the vet. She has some lumps, bumps and cysts we’ll need to keep an eye on. And a couple of teeth that might need to come out. Mary Jane’s biggest issue was her ears. They were full of yeast, very red and moist, and the canals are almost blocked. And they’re soooo itchy! Poor Mary Jane was circling the room at the vet clinic, rubbing her ears on every surface she could find to try to alleviate the pain and itch. The vet gave her ears a good cleaning, and put her on medication and a special hypoallergenic food that has helped.
MJ took a few days to adjust to life at her foster home. She did a lot of pacing and whining and had a tough time settling. Her foster family gave her lots of affection and reassurance during this time, and after a few days, their actions seemed to finally give Mary Jane some comfort. We can’t imagine how confused and sad MJ must have been after being left at the shelter with nothing familiar. No toy or blanket. Nothing to make her feel less lost in the upsetting situation she had been thrown into. We’re so thankful her foster family were there for her…
A couple of days after Christmas, Mary Jane had a very rough night. She was coughing and vomiting and clearly not feeling herself. Our vets diagnosed MJ with kennel cough. She was at the shelter just long enough to be exposed, and because of her age, lack of recent vet care, and the stressful nature of her situation, it’s not surprising she contracted the cough. MJ was prescribed medication, which she thankfully responded to.
MJ had her dental and lump removal surgery, and although she really didn’t enjoy cone life, she did very well.
Her teeth got a good cleaning, and only one tooth needed to come out. She had a few lumps, bumps and skin tags removed, including the ones on her eyelid. Our vets were confident that these were benign and nothing to worry about.
MJ’s foster family did a great job helping her through this, and Mary Jane found her forever home shortly after being listed as available! Yay!
