Angel Cake
* Angel Cake found her forever home with her foster family! Yay! *
Oakville and Milton Humane Society rescued 15 cats from a home where the owner had not lived for about 8 months. The owner was in the hospital, and a family member was living in the home and caring for the cats. Sadly, that family member had health issues of his own, and he passed away suddenly. Another family member reached out to OMHS as the original owner was not going to be returning to the home. All of the cats are about 10-15 years old, and they had been living in less than ideal conditions in the home. OMHS diagnosed one of the cats, Angel Cake, with diabetes and started her on insulin. As their shelter was already packed to the brim with cats, they reached out to Ladybird for help. Because of her age and diabetic status, Angel Cake was the least adoptable cat of the bunch, and they were worried Angel Cake would spend her remaining years stuck in a cage. Nobody wanted that, so we were happy to take this lovely Himalayan in.
Angel Cake is a very friendly kitty! Though she’s been through a lot, she has lots of head-bonks and purrs for everyone she meets. We got her the medical treatment she needed, and she’s now ready to find her forever home!
Here’s a report from Angel Cake’s foster home:
“Angel cake is a very sweet senior kitty who loves being with people. She enjoys sitting near you and often demands pats by reaching her paw out and tapping you. She is not fond of head kisses or bonks but loves it when you pet her. She’d prefer not to be picked up but will tolerate it when needed. She loves to sleep on the bed with people.
Angel cake is in diabetic remission. This means that she has diabetes but her blood glucose values (BG) are currently regulated with diet. She gets canned food and cannot eat dry food (not even a diabetic dry food). Unfortunately this means that other dogs/cats in the home should not be eating dry food either. One or two bites and Angel could go out of remission. She gets at home tested with a glucometer twice a week to monitor her BG readings. We also keep an eye on her litter box habits, eating and overall personality to make sure she isn’t having a diabetic episode. She has had pancreatitis, which is quite common for diabetic cats and this pushed her out of remission. After several days in hospital on fluids she was able to come home and we got her back into remission with diet. She will require veterinary visits at least twice a year and likely more when concerns arise. Given her age and diabetes she needs someone with a discerning eye to monitor her health closely. Angel has had some dental work done and will likely require more in the future. She drools a little because of this and needs her fur groomed on her chest to keep from matting.
If Angel does go out of remission, a person can expect to give insulin twice a day and test using a glucometer 2-8 times per day. Other tests and supports may be required (like fluids). Providing insulin is not always every 12 hours at specific times but changes according to blood glucose values.
Angel is good with other cats. She does hiss a bit if they come close to her but she is just fine if they leave her alone. This goes for dogs as well, but if they come near her at all she is quite scared.
Angel loves to explore and can often be found plunging head first into cupboards, cabinets and doorways. She knocks things over in her adventures like a kitten sometimes! It might surprise some who see that she is 15 years old! She also enjoys playing with wand toys and has a very high prey drive (small animals beware!) Her cute little meow is very endearing.
Likes: pats, wand toys, freeze dried chicken, people
Dislikes: dogs in her space, being locked out of favourite rooms”

Angel Cake’s foster mom got Angel into the vet after she noticed a lump on her head. After aspirating the lump, it was discovered to be a mast cell tumour that needed to be removed. Angel had surgery to remove the lump and it has been sent away for testing. Results came back as nothing serious. Yay!
