Chicago
* Boston and Chicago found their forever home with lovely people! *
Boston, Chicago and Kansas came to us all the way from a shelter in Quebec. Big thank you to all the volunteers from Freedom Drivers – Animal Rescue Transport for getting the rats to us from so far away!
From what we have learned, Boston, Chicago, Kansas were surrendered by their owner, after they had been used for quite some time as breeders for snake food. We’re happy we can now give them the relaxed retirement life they so deserve!
At their vet visit, we got a bit of upsetting news about our new arrivals. We knew they weren’t the healthiest rats when they arrived, but Boston, Chicago, Kansas were suffering various stages of a serious upper respiratory infection, and possibly pneumonia. Our vets started them on medication, and we hoped for the best. We were particularly worried about Kansas, as he was suffering the worst effects of the infection out of the three rats. All three were still active and eating, but you can see their laboured breathing in the video below.
Sadly, we lost poor Kansas a few weeks after his arrival. His little lungs were past the point of repair, and he passed away during the night in his foster home.
Thankfully, Boston and Chicago eventually recovered from the illness, and our vets gave them the go ahead to find their forever home. We’re asking that they be adopted as a pair.
Boston and Chicago are friendly and very curious, but they will definitely need a home with someone who has rat experience. They do occasionally nip, and they can be quite jumpy when being handled. They are senior rats, so their adopter should be aware that they are in their twilight years.
They are currently being housed in a double Critter Nation cage, and they really enjoy the amount of space they have there. They like their hidey houses, and their hammocks for resting, and they can be found exploring every inch of their cage when they’re active. Boston and Chicago like a variety of snacks…chips, crackers, fruit, veggies, and especially the crusts of Roma Pizza! That’s their favourite.
If you have the space, and the time to be patient with these two old boys, we know you won’t regret giving them their forever home.
Please adopt Chicago and Boston!
Ladybird recommends Critter Nation cages. They are hands down the most spacious, and best quality enclosure for small animals on the market. They come in single and double sizes, and can be modified and customized to create enrichment and provide comfort. Their design and solid manufacturing almost entirely eliminates the possibility of accidental escape. Critter Nation cages are available (or can be ordered) at most local pet supply stores.
Can’t adopt but want to help?
Monetary donations are always needed, but if you’d like to donate something specifically for the rats in our care, donations of rat food, small pet blankets (used for cage lining), rat hammocks and fleece liners for Critter Nation cages are very much appreciated!
