Lydia
Lydia arrived at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. She was a nice rabbit, but wobbly on her feet. When we pet Lydia, she was somewhat flinchy, and there was a specific spot on her side where you could feel her skin twitching. We got Lydia into the vet for a check-up. X-rays didn’t show anything unusual, but because the vet suspected nerve damage, Lydia was put on daily pain medication which she loved (thankfully!)
Lydia’s x-rays were sent to a radiologist, and the radiologist identified two areas in Lydia’s spine where it looked like discs were bulging or slipping in to the spinal cord. This was likely caused by a trauma to her spine. It’s possible she was dropped from a hight or her spine twisted unnaturally somehow, but we’ll never know for sure what happened.
Between the time of the initial x-rays and the radiologist sending back their report, Lydia’s mobility got worse. She got more wobbly and tipped over more frequently. We took Lydia to the Ontario Veterinary College Companion Animal Clinic where more tests were performed and she saw a neurologist.
Unfortunately, the OVC vets didn’t have good news for us. They couldn’t confirm 100%, but they agreed that Lydia likely suffered some type of trauma that caused damage to her spine. Her condition would not improve and would eventually get to the point that she wouldn’t be able to stand or walk at all. She likely wouldn’t survive surgery, and if she did, her quality of life would not be good.
Lydia’s foster mom took her home, and the heartbreaking decision was made to end Lydia’s suffering. The next day, after many, many treats and pats, Lydia passed peacefully at the vet clinic in the arms of her foster mom.
We’d like to thank Dr. Davis at Lincoln County Humane Society Vet Clinic, and the vets at OVC for their expert care and kindness towards Lydia.
Sweet Lydia, we’re sorry we couldn’t make you better. We know you’re pain free now, hopping happily and eating all your favourite fruits and veggies. We’ll never forget you.
